Paul Report 21 Aug 2012 17:33

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 21 Aug 2012 17:47

They hadn't named the baby yet?

Barbara

Barbara Report 21 Aug 2012 18:17

If the baby hadn't been named but registered do a search for the same entry (vol.etc) may have been amended at a later date - could be many years later.

Porkie_Pie Report 21 Aug 2012 18:22

As Margee said, but its worth checking to see if their is a death registered the same way in that quarter,

often if a child died shortly after birth it would still need to be registered this some times explains such entries

Robert Report 21 Aug 2012 18:24

maybe a still birth or a baby died within a few days. i seen a still birth certificate for my fathers twin, and all it said on the certificate was male and the surname

mgnv

mgnv Report 21 Aug 2012 21:14

Robert - it won't be a still birth as this index is not available for a search.
Only parents and siblings can obtain still birth certs.

MarieCeleste Report 21 Aug 2012 21:52

Paul - we won't be able to see anymore than you can, only way to find out more is for you to buy a copy of that birth certificate to see who the parents were.

If you go to FreeBMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl and search for births with Foster as the surname and Ings as the mother's maiden name you'll be able to see if there were more children. You can narrow it down by specifying a range of dates to search between.

EDIT: The only births I'm seeing with that combination of surnames are two in Lambeth, none with "male"??

JustDinosaurJill Report 21 Aug 2012 21:58

Hi Paul.

If you found the unamed child using Free BMD you should be abe to find more, if any further children exist, using the same method.

Choose 'birth' as your type of record

Enter the father's surname in the relevent field.

Enter the mother's maiden name in the field relevent to her.

Select your search period.

If the surname isn't too common, you could if you wished to, leave the entries for District or Counties as they are.

If you are certain that you know the area they came from and are unlikely to have lived anywhere else, you can choose that for your option.

I could do the search for you but if you look for it yourself, it will help you to learn your way around FreeBMD.

If you get stuck after trying or would like your search double-checked just say.

This was an illegitimate child...............unless both parents were called Ings, which is unlikely, to say the least

JustDinosaurJill Report 21 Aug 2012 22:23

It is possible that the parents you have for this child are not the right ones. Also possible that if they are the right ones, Foster was not the father and so would not allow his name to be entered onto the birth cert. It's also possible that Foster was dead by the time his widow had a child and he might still not be the father.

If you still think that you have the right couple for the baby, the only way to be certain is to get the birth cert. If it were me and I had the finance to do so, I would get the death cert too.

The possibilities are many and the specualtion will only be answered if you obtain the cert(s).

I'm not familiar with London area so I always use Google Earth. It shows me that Lambeth where MC found two births for Foster/Ings is approximately eleven miles apart so possible that they belong to our couple.

Paul.

All of what we have dismissed or found out for you proves just how important it is to look for ways to confirm or disprove information and even when you think you've found the answer, look for reasons that it might not be.

It's how I work with other stuff I do beyond my family history. When I am researching a subject I try to come up with all the reasons why what I have found out or come to believe might be wrong. That way I hope that if I can't disprove something, there is a very decent chance of it being accurate.
