Find Ancestors

I've had a trawl through the papers from 1880s onwards but can't see anything obvious.

Maybe the crimes on their own were fairly petty and didn't warrant a mention in the papers but totted up gave him a bad record?

Of course, not every newspaper report has been transcribed (or may have been mistranscribed).

However, I can't see anything about his earlier convictions, maybe someone else can have more luck?? He must have had previous to have been in jail in 1891.

Shame isn't it - back then robbery with violence was for stealing a watch, whilst drunk! Bit like stealing a mobile phone these days -but you only get a slap on the wrist One of my ancestors got jailed for stealing a chicken - he was 10 years old!

What times they must have lived in.

No sign of any other criminal reports betwen1891-1901 though, so sorry can't be of any further help. Nothing that I can find on national archives either.

OK David, article sent (hopefully), however despite his "bad record" I can't see anything in the newspaper articles for his previous conviction(s), which is unusual because the Bradford newspaper archive is online - as are many others, but nothing on him prior 1881-1891.

Just thought, which I haven't checked yet, he may have had previous convictions between 1891 and 1899 which would give him a "bad record" Will check it out.

Incidently, Lancashire libraries have the online 19c newspapers - it's free to join and it doesn't matter where you live, you can apply for a card and browse their collections.

yes you have the correct person and yes i had seen the blacksheep anncesters item but as you say doesnt give his connviction he was slaters labourer and he married teresa murray in 1897 in bradford and they had two sons john thomas my grandfather and his brother joseph i have tried for years to find anything about his connvictions but am well and truley stuck many thanks for you help david

well he's listed but it doesn't say for what crime

Hello David Ian, do you have any idea what this chap's occupation was when he wasn't in prison? Also did he marry, and if so - who to?

There are quite a few articles in the newspapers for the 1890s so if you have any additional info then it might help us see if they're the right ones.

hi all i no is his name thomas egan born 1871 bradford his father was michael egan b1846 and his mother was honora b1847 on the 1891 census he was in armley jail leeds and later in portland jail on 1901 census i would love to no what he was connvicted of as i have found out portland prison was only for very serious crime many thanks david hullah
