I'm a bit stumped as to where to go from here. I'm trying to trace my paternal great grandfather and grandmother.

Information I have so far is:

My father: John Arthur Louis Hardy
Born 1920 (Paddington, London)
Died 1984

His Mother: Christiana Metcalfe (incorrectly sometimes shown as Christina)
His father: John Hardy - Born abt 1883/died 1963

I know that my great grandfather's father's name was James and that when my grandfather and grandmother married in 1920 he was deceased and was a general dealer.

I do not know what my great grandmother's name was (although I had found some records for a Margaret Bone and in the 1901 Census a family with these names lived with their 2 sons; John and James in Marleybone, London - so a possibility?)

Earlier Census records have revealed nothing to me.

Any help on what or where I should be looking would be greatley appreciated.

Thank you

Kucinta Report 3 Oct 2012 22:15

The marriage of John Hardy to Margaret Bone took place in 1886.

James Hardy jr in census 1901 seems to predate the marriage as born c1881, is he Margaret's child by her first marriage, or was he James' child by his first marriage?

John Hardy has variable birthdates - c1883 in census 1901 as posted, c1886 in the 1911 census posted, so he could be born before or after the 1886 marriage. If so, was his mother Margaret, or a first wife from the previous marriage that Kath postulated?

EDIT The James Hardy who married Margaret Bone is described as a bachelor.

That's really interesting Vicci.

I wonder if John Bone and James Bone are the same person or if John Bone died and James moved in with Margaret and she just gave the Bone name to the enumerator when each census came round. His name must have been Hardy or he wouldn't have married using that name.

EDIT - there is this death in Marylebone:-
