We think William McPherson (not sure if Mac or Mc) was his father's son but obviously this was not listed on the birth certificate as looks like Annie had John Muir then died and Muir was her family name.

I suppose since Beith was such a small village then people might have known John Muir's father and also William McPhersons hence the reason for the step brother. Seemingly William McPherson worked in the local picture house.

Re the 1901 census
The man named William Kerr was entered as a Lodger, a Leather Curer who was also born in Beith, Ayrshire.

John Muir is on this census is with his widowed grandmother Barbara Muir MS Morrison.
John was born in Jul 1897 and his mother Annie died 13 months later.

I guess if Annie had another son, then he would be older than John, but why do you think he would he be named McPherson?

There seems to be a mention of John Muir having a half brother called Wiliam Mcpherson but not sure how you would find this out any steps for a hint!

Do you think William Kerr at the bottom is a friend?

I think Shirley has possibly located the correct birth record
The mother of John Muir b 1896 in Beith was Annie STIRRAT Muir.
The 1901 census posted by glitterbaby is the child with his grandmother.

I think John was raised by his grandmother, and hois own daughter named Barbara will be named for her.
