Eldest brother Duncan who died aged 27 was married to a Cecila Robson
the informant on his death 1910 was his brother Andrew .

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 3 May 2015 09:17

UPDATE having seen images of orig documents
Eldest brother Duncan.s Death;
Duncan seems to have somehow drowned in some water tub it's a bit illegible
his wife Celia nee Robson died in 1944 her death was registered by their SON D...... ? MacDermid ... hard to read

so sad that Duncan aged 27 died In Sept ,the same year as his father aged 48 had died
Family story is that Malcom fell off a roof but i don't have the death cert to prove it .

Andrew died in Cumbuslang in 1964 his death is registered by .....?(Elizabeth?) Macdairmid but for some reason it has her as an intimate friend rather than his spouse .! still at 30 Dean's Av

The youngest sibling John was born in august 1910 so wouldn't have known his father

Alisoun Report 3 May 2015 14:16

looks like james Black the grocer was not the right one

here's the family leaving UK

Southampton to Wellington, New Zealand -- departed 12 February 1926

BLACK
- James - 32 - Miner
- Jean - 36 - h/w (housewife)
- James - 4
- Jean - 2
Nationality : All Scottish

Last address: 12 Draffanbank (looks like) - Motherwell

so jeannie must have married James Duff Black between 1920 + 1922

Alisoun Report 4 May 2015 07:13

Update ; Malcolm sibling number 5

found malcolm's marriage in 1921 to lizzie Dougall
he was a master shoemaker aged 27 his brother James witnessed the marriage still living in cumbuslang

Also some possible malcom Macdermid s on valuation rolls in 1925 ..i especially liked tenant occupier of shop on main st, lilybank , cambuslang

can't find deaths for Malcolm McDermid b1894 + lizzie maybe they too emigrated later .

Found Duncan's widow Celia as a tenant of John Street lane Glasgow in 1920 + 1925

she is not the mysterious Mrs macdermid of 22 clydeford rd sited as next of kin in 1923 when Christina + James left for USA .
It can't be a misprint for Jeannie as she'd married James black in 1919

It wasn't my grandmother Mary Blain Stevenson Macdermid as she wasn't married to Tommy then
could it have been Andrew's wife Elizabeth McDiarmid Macdermid tho he was still alive

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 4 May 2015 19:20

Re your other thread, Alisoun -

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1351735

I'm assuming that it's the mother of Malcolm Macdermid you're referring to, and I also assume that you're interested in the fact that on her children's birth records, and in 1871 & 1881 censuses (on page 1 of this thread) she's called Agnes, but she's Christina on Malcolm's death cert .

Without trawling through the whole thread, I'm not sure if the 1861 was posted for the family - probably not - so here it is. She's Agnes there, too:

Duncan Mcdearmid

in the 1861 Scotland Census
Name: Duncan Mcdearmid
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Agnes Mcdearmid
Gender: Male
Where born: Eastwood, Renfrew
Registration Number: 652/1
Registration district: Old Monkland Western District
Civil Parish: Old Monkland
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Carmyle
Occupation: Cotton Bleacher
ED: 3
Household schedule number: 45

Household Members:
Name Age
Duncan Mcdearmid 30
Agnes Mcdearmid 32 - born Mearns, Renfrewshire
Walter Mcdearmid 4
Duncan Mcdearmid 1

And also in 1851:

Agnes Mcdermaid
in the 1851 Scotland Census

Name: Agnes Mcdermaid
Age: 24
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1827
Relationship: Wife
Spouse: Ducan Mcdermaid
Gender: Female
Where born: Glasgow, Lanark
Parish Number: 562
Civil Parish: Eastwood
Phillimore Ecclesiastical Parish Maps:
View related Ecclesiastical Parish
Town: Pollockshaws
County: Renfrewshire
Address: Carteraigs St
ED: 3
Page: 17
Household schedule number: 73
LINE: 10
Roll: CSSCT1851_117
Household Members:
Name Age
Ducan Mcdermaid 22 - born Pollokshaws
Agnes Mcdermaid 24

She was also Agnes when she married Duncan (already posted somewhere in this thread, but I'll put it here again):
22/06/1850 MCDIARMID DUNCAN
AGNES MACFARLANE/FR1260 (FR1260) M EASTWOOD /LANARK 562/00 0050 0271

As she isn't called Christina anywhere but on Malcolm's death cert, I suggest it's a mistake by the registrar.
The informant was Malcolm & Jeannie's son Duncan (who died later the same year - 1910), and who was then living at 47 Coventry Drive, Dennistoun.

brigid

brigid Report 17 May 2016 23:00

The mistake was I think that Duncan's other grandmother was called Christine (2nd wife of his grandad Andrew Kyle ....that could explain it .

My 90 year old aunty is disappointed that I haven't contacted any living relatives yet

So I.m going to take a fresh look at all this

brigid Report 19 May 2016 10:47

info from Rootschat Ireland forum

"This seems quite easy to find using Family Search & GRONI. I started searching civil registration index on FS (in case Duncan was not born in one of the 6 counties of Northern Ireland) and found a possible birth registration- Duncan M'Dermoid April/June 1905 Belfast
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FBLH-DY4

Next, going to GRONI's index I searched for first name Duncan & last name begin
https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/ "

My browser wont let me look at the Family search record

but the Geni record ;; is DURCAN McDORMOND mothers name Rielson .

so maybe Not ours

brigid

Celia macdermids death cert 1944 shows her as widow of Duncan macdermid clerk

mother was Mary Robson (no father given)

address 119 Glenshee st Glasgow signed by son Duncan macdermid

brigid

brigid Report 19 May 2016 11:24

birth
july 22 1909 mary agnes McDermid illegit
mother Celia Alfreda Robson domestic servant
father Duncan Mcdermid mercantile clerk

both parents were present at birth reg and address was given as the macdermid family home 92 River road Carmyle

I cant find only 2 marriages for D Macdermid between 1909 and 1911 and they are not our couple
so maybe they didnt get around to it before his untimely death .

So was it pure chance that Celia named first boy Duncan and we need to look for his birth as D. Robson now ?

we now know approx birth year 1879
celia's unusual middle name should help trace her origins
and maybe she was with her mother Mary Robson ; are irish census years same as british ?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 May 2016 11:36

No sign of Celia in 1901 Irish census, which is the only available one which she might have been on:

Births Sep 1879 (>99%)
Robson Celia Alfradine Castle W. 10b 258

(Castle Ward, Northumberland - includes Gosforth)

brigid

brigid Report 19 May 2016 17:23

wow you're a wizz AG

there surely cant be 2 Celia Alfredine Robson .

wonder how /when /where she met our grocers clerk from Scotland

+ why she would go to Ireland to give birth ...I would dismiss that as wrong info on census if there wasnt a birth for Duncan Macdermond in Belfast in 1905

also i think i saw somewhere that Celia couldnt read , so spellings innaccurate
:-)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 May 2016 17:43

Very long shot for Celia's son Duncan:

Births Dec 1902 (>99%)
McDiarmid Duncan Newcastle T. 10b 150

(ie - in Northumberland, where Celia was in 1901.)

I'm not convinced by the Belfast birth - but certainly there's no sign of that child in the 1911 Irish census.

I think you'll have to find Celia on the 1911 Scottish census on SP, and see if she has a son with her, and if so, when and where he was born.

EDIT:
She's there, but you'll have to look at the image to see who else was in the household;

1911 MACDERMID CELIA F 32 CALTON (GLASGOW) GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/03 052/00 012

I entered Duncan as "second person forename", and that result still came up, so the child's with her - in which case he's not the one born in 1902.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 May 2016 17:57

By manipulating the search, I can see that Duncan's stated to be 6 years old in 1911 census.

So born c1905 - so maybe the Belfast one is correct after all.

But more likely are these two possibilities:

1905 MACDIARMID DUNCAN M PARTICK GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 646/03 1920

1905 MACDIARMID DUNCAN M HUTCHESONTOWN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/11 2218

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 May 2016 18:27

But there's no sign of a marriage between Celia and Duncan senior, in Scotland or England.

brigid

brigid Report 19 May 2016 21:03

on the 1911 census it does say Duncan was born in ireland

on his sisters birth cert 1909 their mother is unmarried but duncan sn is present to register birth and they give birth as as his parents house 92 river road

Mary agnes was registered as Macdermid

but maybe Duncan was born as Robson tho ; i'll just check previous searches ;I ruled out The MacDiarmid spellings as thats a more distant spelling

Unfortunately There was a Duncan patriarch so eldest sons or 3rd sons frequently named after their gfathers or father + most were long living so turn up on several censuses and valuation rolls in lanark .need a map to see proximity of . hutchesown

duncan sn 's death address was coventry road dennistoun
