The time between the death of Olive and the birth of the first child to Phelps and Stock marriage Is dubious? Possible skeletons in the cupboard

The marriage was pretty close after her death too. It's quite possible they had already parted some time before of course. Most people didn't divorce as it was tricky and expensive.
Normally I might suggest checking electoral register for his address when he married your grandmother, to see if possible who else was living there, but as there were no registers during the war this could only be done for a couple of years.

Ok, so after a pretty sleepless night with everything whirling around in my head..... Is it possible to find out whether there were children from the first marriage ( Edward Charles phelps and olive watts?) if so,how do I go about doing so? Also, if we wanted to find out how olive died I presume we would need to order a copy of her death certificate?

The only way to establish cause of death is indeed to purchase the cert.

To see whether there were issue from the marriage, go to freebmd and put the surnames in the appropriate boxes and click on 'find'

OR................

................use the following site, and follow the same procedure

Hi reggie thanks for that link... I have tried to input the information that I have but it shows up with 0 matches, but I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong as I also looked for their wedding ( as a test) and I couldn't get a match on that either! We know Edward charles phelps married olive watts in 1942 in st ethelberts church in little dean in the forest of Dean . We also know that she died in sept of 1947, so why can't I get a hit on that site? She was 24 when she died

Hi Lucie

I just tried it and it works for me.

Click on Marriage Search..........

Put Phelps in the Groom Surname box and Watts in the Bride Surname Box......year married between 1942 and 1942 and it should pop up.

Olive's death does not show on there..........but it does on FreeBMD.

You don't say which site you are looking on.
Are you using freebmd ?

Are you putting in too much information.

For example .. if you enter Edward Charles and the record is only Edward C. it won't show up.

Thanks everyone for all of your helpful advice, clearly a novice like me needs as much help as I can get! I have ordered the death certificate now, so we will just have to see what happens next xxxxxx
