Caroline Report 9 Dec 2012 12:25

I'm looking for my great grand uncle He was born about July 1873 in St Giles, London and was living in Whitfield Street, St Pancras, London during the census' of 1881 and 1891. I think he may have a marriage in 1903 but don't know who to and can't find him at all in census' of 1901 and 1911. It may be that he has altered his name, as his forename and those of his siblings are made more english.

Any assistance most gratefully received!

His marriage I think is the 1903 as it uses his given name Andreas which he changes to Andrew.

Still mystified as to where he is in 1901 and 1911! Any thoughts?

I think that 1903 birth was his nephew:

London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906

Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 28 Dec 1903
Father's Name: Henry Albert Ritterhoff
Mother's Name: Lary Sarah Ritterhoff

There was also a Henry William to the same parents in 1901.

The Boer record Marie Celeste posted gives:

Notes: Discharged from 93rd Coy. I.Y.. 50 Wintfield St., Tottenham Court Rd..

In census 1911 Andrew's mother Marie Josephine is listed as living at 52 Whitfield St. I can't find No 50 on an address search to check the occupants.

No such address as Wintfield Street comes up on address search.

Census 1911

Address: 52 Whitfield ST County: London

RITTERHAFF, Marie Josephine Head Widow F 63 1848 Launderss Brussels

She was also living at the same address 52 Whitfield St in 1901 as Mary Ritterhoff, so it looks like the Boer war record almost certainly applies to 'your' Andrew.

Caroline Report 9 Dec 2012 16:29

That is definitely him as the address is Whitfield Street off Tottenham Court Road! That's my second relative in the Boer Wars :-)

Wonder what happened to him after he came back, can't find him in the 1911 census?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 9 Dec 2012 19:35

Wonder if he might have anglicised his surname, too?

Have looked on shipping lists, overseas deaths, newspaper archives and not seeing anything for him.

Any comment on the info I posted?

Caroline

Caroline Report 12 Dec 2012 19:52

I wonder if when he married in 1903 that he changed his name then perhaps?

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 12 Dec 2012 20:24

The 1920 marriage Reggie posted implies that Andreas/Andrew had almost certainly married Marie Theresa De Smet.

She married again using the name Ritterhoff - though maybe they changed it for day to day use and retained it for official purposes only?

The 1920 marriage cert would be interesting to see if Marie Theresa is a widow or a divorcee, though I couldn't find any records of a divorce on the National Archives site.

Thanks for all the responses!

It is a real conundrum as to where Andreas/Andrew Ritterhoff disappeared to, suspect there may be a transcription error somewhere.

I'm struggling to find what happened to Andreas/Andrew, guess he died as his wife remarried, but can't find any trace of him after 1901. Any thoughts? Thanks.
