Well what a coinsidence Kucinta...I am going to take a virtual stroll hopefully to find Alexandra Villa :)...it never ceases to amaze me, when I make contact with someone on here like yourself who lived in and around my local stamping ground..

I wondered that too...

I also noticed that Charlotta was born, or at least living, in Alexandra Villa Elton Road (Clifton) Bristol in 1881.

That's just round the corner from the university where I work. They are quite grand houses, and many of them have been bought up by Bristol Grammar School to be used to house various of their departments

Unfortunately they're set well back from the road, so it wouldn't be easy to work out which one was Alexandra Villa.

You could use google maps streetview to take a stroll up it...

I was born in Kenley, but raised in Sanderstead and some of my ancestors lived off the Godstone Road in Whyteleafe, and Mum, and later one of my sisters and myself went to Whyteleafe Grammar (showing my age!).

The sanitarium was also known as the Surrey Hills Hydro.

On the 1912 arrival in USA she was headed to San Jose, California.

Her nearest friend in England was Mr (or W) Caine (looks like) in Caterham - Timber Hill (or Mill) Cottage.

Yes that is defintely my Charlotta..she marrried in Santa Clara, California for the 1st time...and then in 1950 in the Black Forest Germany... Then finally died in San Diego, California........

Seems to have been part of some good health movement of the times.

Going by the article I posted at 19:12, it was all mod cons and facilities for the era - I think I'd have been happy to stay there myself! :-)

It seems a bit along the lines of some sort of health spa.

Caterham Sanitarium founded in 1903? NB NOT the Metropolitan Asylum, see my earlier posting.

"Dr and Mrs A B Olsen published the Good Health journal in 1901 and started a Sanitarium in Caterham, Surrey in 1903; In 1902 Dr J J Bell opened a 10 bed Sanitarium in Belfast (moved to Rostrevor in 1906); and Dr F C Richards ran a Sanitarium in rented premises in Leicester in 1903."


"The Metropolitan District Asylum for insane persons and imbeciles, erected in 1870, is situated in the upper part of this parish. Adjoining the asylum are barracks for the recruits of the brigade of Foot Guards."

Two different institutions, Caterham Sanitarium (Godstone Rd) and the Metropolitan Asylum, near the barracks.

Incidently, if you look at the addresses, Charlotte Cooper is listed as being an Inmate at the Metropolitan Asylum, Charlotta L Creeper is matron of Caterham Sanitarium, so they appear to be two different institutions
