Good Health Magazine, May 1910 page 138 onwards, a piece about Caterham Sanitarium.

You'll need to page downwards, past the opening photo etc.

It seems a bit along the lines of some sort of health spa.

Chris Ho :)

Another much smaller mention of Caterham Sanitarium again in Good health magazine, page 586, plus photograph of the sanitarium in winter at the beginning of the piece.

Seems to have been part of some good health movement of the times.

Going by the article I posted at 19:12, it was all mod cons and facilities for the era - I think I'd have been happy to stay there myself! :-)

Edit . Googling shows it was tied in with Seventh day Adventists.

Kucinta Report 30 Dec 2012 19:44

The Olsens, who founded Caterham Sanitarium in 1903 (see an earlier post), were living very close by in 1911:

She also seems to have gone to USA in 1898:

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Charlotta Creeper Name: Charlotta Creeper
Arrival Date: 24 Aug 1898
Birth Date: abt 1881
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/ Nationality: English
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Teutonic

She's a nurse, heading to Battle Creek, Michigan.

The 1912 arrival gives her last address as Caterham but says her nationality is Prussian. She's heading to California but I can't make out name of city.

Dorothy Report 31 Dec 2012 12:50

Thank you to everyone who has helped me to try and track down my elusive Charlotta..couldn't have done it without you :-) I'll go through everything listed here

Have a great New Year and Happy Hunting in 2013 to everyone here on Genes

Dorothy Report 31 Dec 2012 12:56

Yes that is defintely my Charlotta..she marrried in Santa Clara, California for the 1st time...and then in 1950 in the Black Forest Germany... Then finally died in San Diego, California........

thank you so much everyone......

MarieCeleste Report 31 Dec 2012 12:58

On the 1912 arrival in USA she was headed to San Jose, California.

Her nearest friend in England was Mr (or W) Caine (looks like) in Caterham - Timber Hill (or Mill) Cottage.

Think it would be Timber Hill going on the Francis Frith site

Kucinta Report 31 Dec 2012 13:20

The sanitarium was also known as the Surrey Hills Hydro.

Some more photos in an article posted on ebay

Dorothy Report 31 Dec 2012 13:45

Thank you Kucinta... :-) wonder if this became the Surrey Hills clinic circa 1960.. lots to do on my next visit to Caterham....(my home town)

Kucinta Report 31 Dec 2012 16:18

I wondered that too...

I also noticed that Charlotta was born, or at least living, in Alexandra Villa Elton Road (Clifton) Bristol in 1881.

That's just round the corner from the university where I work. They are quite grand houses, and many of them have been bought up by Bristol Grammar School to be used to house various of their departments

Unfortunately they're set well back from the road, so it wouldn't be easy to work out which one was Alexandra Villa.

You could use google maps streetview to take a stroll up it...

I was born in Kenley, but raised in Sanderstead and some of my ancestors lived off the Godstone Road in Whyteleafe, and Mum, and later one of my sisters and myself went to Whyteleafe Grammar (showing my age!).

Dorothy Report 1 Jan 2013 17:09

Well what a coinsidence Kucinta...I am going to take a virtual stroll hopefully to find Alexandra Villa :) never ceases to amaze me, when I make contact with someone on here like yourself who lived in and around my local stamping ground..
