I think you have the 2 Thomas longstaff mixed up.
The Thomas born to Ellen nee knox and John a coal miner.
1881 Wingate D21 >7 Seymour street.
Ellen a widow
John henry 11
Thomas 7
George 4

Thomas Knox
Martha knox parents of Ellen Knox

1891 Hutton Henry Durham D26 >12
Thomas longsteff 17 nephew

Hope you can follow this and see it is almost certain you are following the wrong Thomas.

That' s my suspicion Mary. That' s why it's so important Iris confirms the details from the marriage certificate. It would be such a shame if she has the wrong branch on her tree.

Hopefully we can help clear the confusion.

IT doesnt give toms fathers name at all unfortunately

Iris, if it doesn't give any father's name then that strongly indicates that he was illegitimate.

How have you worked back from him to the people you have in your tree that you have assumed to be his family?

There are other Longstaff family living in Eston ,tried to find a connection as it looks as though there could be one.
As yet haven't found it and choosing the correct birth record for Tom looks a difficult one.
