People did change their occupation fairly frequently. If He was the Thomas who married Elizabeth Rowlands, he was a mariner on the marriage and on the birth of the first Owen Rowland Davies, then a grocer for John Owen Davies & Hugh Ro(w)land Davies, a collector in 1881 and on Hannah Jane's baptism in 1867 and an insurance agent (another name for a collector?) possibly in 1891.

Do let us know the outcome Mary when you get that birth certificate.

Baptisms: 19 Mar 1860 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Owen Rowland Davies - Child of Thomas Davies & Elizabeth
Born: 13 Feb 1860
Abode: Everton
Occupation: Mariner

I had been wondering about an Owen family name as it was used so often for the sons middle names.John Owen and Hugh became mariners-John Owen s mate and master certificates are on line.

if their mother was Elizabeth Rowlands then her father from the marriage certificate was called Owen

the Elizabeth Davies with daughter Hannah Booker that you have for 1891 is not yours

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1882
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
DAVIES Hannah BOOKER Franke Toxteth Park, St. Michael Liverpool 2068TP/14/1

from the image of the marriage (8-2-1882) on ancestry Hannah's father was Henry Davies and she was 19 yrs old

if this Hannah was your relative then you are following the wrong line with Thomas & Elizabeth

Did you John Owen marry Ellen Riley?

If so in 1886 father Thomas describes himself as a 'canvasser'

Mary

Mary Report 10 Jan 2013 15:06

Yes we are looking at the John Owen m Ellen Riley descent. My mistake,Ellen's father was collector on marriage cert.We wondered if canvasser was connected to ships but seems not?John Owen was Master Mariner sailing welsh slate to Australia acc to family story.

By the way,I am also researching Thomas Rowland Hughes who was High Sheriff of Caernarfon shire in 1914.there is a male b in Liverpool 1848(1911 census) who could be him.AFamily history claims he was the natural father of Ellen Riley(her son told his daughter who is still alive).i have asked Caernarfon archives for confirmation that the High Sheriff need not be Welsh etc.

the image was on ancestry if you have access

the writing is terrible but I think it says Steward for Owen Rowlands and mariner for Thomas Davies

the witnesses are Thomas and Margaret Hughes

It may be coincidence but there is a marriage of a Thoams Hughes to a Margaret Davies in 1846 in Toxteth Park

Please can you find the marriage of Bernard Reilly to Jane birkett in Liverpool c 1840.i believe he was married to first Ellen Evans in 1836 ,children Thomas b 1835 and Martha 1837 and Mary Ann 1839,but I can't find her death .I think he then remarried and had other children with Jane,1851 census Everton includes Thomas and Martha ,Thomas married Mary Sullivan in 1857.
The marriage and death may be in Catholic registers.
Thanks for looking.

surname seems to be mainly spelt Riley
