Hello Anne,
I have found the death certificate for William Porter. He died in 1874 but his age at the time of his death is shown as 68 years old. Could the registrar have recorded the wrong date? It is the same person as his occupation is given as "slater" & the informant was his wife Jane Porter. William Porter's parents were William Porter & Elizabeth Porter(nee Dunlop) This family's ancestry has certainly been a challenge.
Regards,
Dougie

Hi Dougie, Good. I was pretty sure that this was the right Jane Porter. If you ever do find her father's death cert, let me know who his parents were and I will check the death cert for another Mr Porter. I have also been looking at a family called Porter who lived in Glasgow at the same time. The father was called Alexander Porter, and he too was born in Ireland circa 1800. I know this man died between 1871 and 1881. As a rule, I don't research families of people who married into my family but I have been looking at this Alexander's children in a vain attempt to find his missing grandsons. His own son was married into my family, but died in 1877. The widowed wife applied for relief with her younger boys education, so I know exactly where everyone was at that point (1877)
3 out of 4 sons , simply vanish with no trace of them or their widowed mother on any 1881 census or afterwards ( would be aged between 12 and 18yrs at 1881) Their mother re married in 1885 and died in 1888.

Hello Anne,
I have checked. Jane Knight previously Porter was the daughter of William Porter & Mary Crilley Thank you for your assistance. I have found information about this family a bit of a challange. My suspicions have always been that William Porter & Mary originally came from Ireland & may have still been living there I had always wondered why Ann Porter who was living in Edinburgh had come through to Glasgow to marry Charles Brown. Obviously her family were living there & that was the reason
Regards,
Dougie :-)

Dougie, by sheer coincidence, I too have spent my afternoon seeking another Glasgow family called Porter. I have not found any connection between yours and mine but in my search, I may have stumbled upon Jane Porter, daughter of William and Mary and sister to Ann.
You would of course, need to look at this marriage. Jane Porter married Andrew Rose Knight in Milton, Glasgow on 30 Dec 1859. Children: Andrew McLean Knight b 28 Dec 1860 Glasgow William Knight b 3 Jan 1863 Glasgow ( 2nd son is traditionally named for maternal g/father) George Knight b 2 Mar 1865 Glasgow John Knight b 2 Jul 1867 Glasgow Donald Knight 7 Apr 1869 Glasgow Mary Knight b 9 Jul 1871 Glasgow (1st dau is traditionally named for maternal g/mother) **CHARLES BROWN KNIGHT b 24 Apr 1874** Margaret Knight bc 1876 Glasgow James Knight bc 1879 Glasgow
Jane Knight previously Porter died in Glasgow 1916 Anne

Hi Dougie, I looked for William's death too and could not find it on SP. There is no Will either.
As Mary (Crilly) died before statutory records began in 1855, if, any death info is held, it would be on a mortcloth record The mortcloths do not provide much info, even when there is one.

The Information found about Charles Brown is probably correct as he was born in Old Deer,Aberdeenshire about 1838. I have found now a death certificate for Jane Porter(nee Brownlie) Jane died in 1903 in Glasgow It would appear that she had been married to a David Ramsay(occupation Cabinet Maker) prior to marrying William Porter. As William Porter & his wife Mary(nee Crilley) both came from Ireland I can only assume that they were married there. William Porter's birthplace is County Down. As yet I have been unable to find a date of death for either William Porter or Mary Porter(nee Crilley). I would like to thank everyone who has assisted me so far with information on this family. It is very much appreciated.
Regards,
Dougie

Charles Brown's occupation was given as a" warehouseman" on his marriage certificate. I had suspicions that they may have originally come from Ireland as the name "Crilley" has Irish origins.
Cheers

I am trying to find out information about my Great Great Great Grandfather William Porter, his wife Mary(nee Crilley) & their daughter Ann Porter. The information I have is as follows Ann Porter was born about 1842 but I do not no whereabouts she was born. She married my Great Great Grandfather Charles Brown in Glasgow in !870 although the appeared to be living in Edinburgh as they both gave an Edinburgh address. Ann Porter's age was stated to be 28 years old when she got married. She died in Dundee in 1878 On her marriage certificate her father William Porter's occupation was given as a "Slater" Her mother was deceased when Ann got married in 1870. I have tried to find out information about this family in both the Scottish & English records but have had no joy. Any help would be appreciated.
Regards Dougie.
