I know quite abit about my 4 x great grandfather Alexander Oldham a former Teacher/Hatter. I believed he was an upstanding member or society until i ordered his death certificate. Died aged 76 - Cause of Death - Exhaustion from Excessive Drinking. An inquest was held so would there be a newspaper report. His final place of decease was Union Workhouse, unsure if there was a Hospital attached or actually went into the Workhouse

Most workhouses had an infirmary attached which was like our hospitals. Did the death certificate give his usual address as well or was the workhouse the only address on the certificate?

There could have been a report in the local newspaper of the time (back copies of which should be at the nearest library to where the death took place) if he was well known in the area. However if he ended up living in the workhouse and died because of excessive drinking then perhaps the newspapers wouldn't have been interested in his death.

The only address was Union Workhouse, Stockport. Another ancestor of mine had been admitted but only to the hospital side, hence my question.

Note - have googled for Exhaustion from Excessive Drinking.

Can you give the death details (dates etc), that way we can look at the news reports. I'm pretty sure the Stockport newspapers are available on Lancashire online newspapers.

And if you haven't already come across this "mad as a hatter" comes from the problem hatters had with the chemicals they used, (mercury) it sent them doollally (if that is a word). But I'll think you'll get the drift.

Thank you Margee i have just looked up the original record .. interesting. Showing that he is a Widow so his wife Charlotte predeceased him.....

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 12 Jan 2013 18:33

There were 2 of them in Cheshire on the 61 census, one a hatter and the other a teacher.

We dont know he was Mad... Mine was married to Charlotte - the death cert i have says Hatter.....

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 12 Jan 2013 18:45

Then I would say that you have the wrong death certificate. If your Alexander was definitely married to Charlotte then he was the school teacher not the hatter

Mark

Mark Report 12 Jan 2013 18:46

The death certificate i have is dated

24 July 1875

Wonder if the 1851 census is him - he has acquired a wife and is a schooll-master - but none of the above children are with him.

So doubt this is the same family, think you may need to go back to basics!

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 12 Jan 2013 18:53

So Maria Frith was the daughter of the school teacher not the hatter who died in 1875. I suspect her father was the one who died in 1869.

Mark Report 12 Jan 2013 18:56

Flip - that is the correct family yes - thank you very much
