My g.grandfather Edward Reuben ABBOTT living in Middlsbrough in the 1911 census declares his birth place as Lincolnshire. However, in previous census returns from 1851 to 1901 he declares his birthplace as POPLAR. Middlesex.
He marries in Whitechapel in 1866 to Susan Louisa Churchward, but declares himself as HERBERT ABBOTT, from here I track him to Hull where they have their first child MARY JAN|E (1867) and then onward to 1871 in Middlesbrough.where he becomes Edward Abbott. His burial records show him as Edward Reuben Abbott age 81 in 1923.
The only Reuben I can find is in Lincolnshire in 1851 and his brothers William and Thomas who declare their birthplace as Timberland or Kirkstead but they also end up in Middlesbrough. My conundrum is this:- Is Reuben Abbott born 1841 in Timberland my g.grandfather rather than someone born in Poplar?? I have to make sure - before I can go backward in time. Maybe someone out there can help? : :-)

I don't think the man in the 1911 census at Middlesbrough is the same one. He says he has been married 36 years (which would put the marriage at about 1875) whereas if your man married Susan Louisa Churchwood that was in 1866.
You need to work backwards from yourself from details you KNOW are correct. Go from your parents to your grandparents and so on. How far back are you absolutely certain of?

1871 with Edward and Susan is Thomas Abbott 1847 born Lincs brother to Edward.
Thomas marries a Elizabeth and then Ellen Marshall widow.
1911 Thomas had died and Ellen is still at family home
30,Marshall Street.
With her is Reuben (Susan's husband)
Ellen filled in the form by the looks of it and she maybe assumed he was born the same place as her husband Thomas.
The only strange thing is why did he marry as Herbert and sign it Herbert and say he was born Poplar.
A tree on Ancestry has Rueben and Thomas son of Thomas 1811 Lincs and Mary,who according to 1851 census were living seperately.
