I think I would be inclined to buy the 1849 birth certificate and see if that Thomas is illegitimate and see what his mother's name actually is. It's the only likely birth I can see for a Thomas H. Robson in Newcastle, although of course as early as 1849 his birth may not have been registered.

I believe his father to be Shield, but of the three children he had whilst married to others is the only one not using his surname.
