Thanks all for your replies. I know his date of birth and family records back to 1816 or so. I have navy records (£3.36!) showing him at HMSVictory - Naval Barracks Portsmouth and HMS Excellent - Gunnery Training School Whale Island. (1914) He was still serving in the navy or fleet air arm in 1924 - left at some point and rejoined prior to WW2 and was at HMS Champion Sheerness.

He was still in the Navy/Fleet Air Arm in 1923 - gosh and he walked with a navy roll so he must have been at sea for a while! (I know cos I worked on cruise liners in the 70s) He ended up at Yeovilton.

My father also volunteered for the navy at the start of WW2 and had something to do with developing radar - all very hush-hush.
