The original census returns for 1861 and 1871 were destroyed shortly after the censuses were taken. Those for 1881 and 1891 were pulped during the First World War, probably because of the paper shortage. The returns for 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 were, apart from a few survivals, notably for a few counties for 1821 and 1831, destroyed in 1922 in the fire at the Public Record Office at the beginning of the Civil War. |

Unfortunately the 1861 census records for Ireland have been destroyed. |

As Kathleen has suggested they could have been on a visit to Ireland. |

I suppose it is possible they went to Ireland for a visit - does anyone know if there are any Irish Census records on line |

Both the entries I have put on come from the marriage cert and the birth cert. |

Kathleen it certainly looks like you might be right. So far no luck. |

Could they have gone back to Ireland to visit Ellen's relatives and not been in England for the census in 1861? |

There was an Ellen Ainscough living in Liverpool in the 1851 census but she was born in Manchester - not Ireland so more likely to be Ellen Brady who married John Alexander in 1954 - although obviously only the certificate would confirm this. |

Richard, when did John and Ellen marry? Just wondering if Ann might have been born before this? |
