As a new member how do I get the information on my grandparents when I do not know their names, other than Grandfather was England, and I do not know their date of birth or date of death. Looking up England under the London area without any more refined details, brings up hundreds of them. I have looked my parents marriage certificate up thinking this might give me a lead, but sadly it does not. My father had two brothers and two sisters, but not knowing dates of births or deaths, and in the case of the boys, not really sure of their Christian names, other than I think they were Harold and Harry. Both were older than my father, and to my knowledge were killed during the last war years. Can a kind soul give me some guide lines? Sheba

Hi Sheba,

Start with what you know for a fact and work backwards.

We will help you.

Do you have your parents marriage cert - if so, please post ALL the details from it and we can see what we can find.

Dea Xxx

brummiejan Report 14 Feb 2013 21:57

Welcome to the Boards Sheba.
I have a feeling you do not have that marriage cert. If I am right you must get it - it costs £9.25 and can be ordered online from the GRO (just google it).

PricklyHolly Report 14 Feb 2013 22:05

Hi Sheba

Who were your parents? ........when and where were they born and when did they marry?

Inky1 Report 14 Feb 2013 23:21

As Dea states: Start with what you know.

Hopefully you will have your grandfathers forenames from your parents marriage certificate.

You know your fathers full name & DoB, and your mothers full maiden name and her DoB?

If they were born after about 1914, then a search for their births might (ie depends on the number hits you get) provide you with your grandmothers maiden names.

Then you should be well on your way to tracing the marriages of both sets of grandparents

Kucinta Report 15 Feb 2013 13:27

You say you're not sure of the forenames of your father's brothers, does that mean you know the forenames of his sisters? If so, what were they?

There are deaths for a Harold and various Harry Englands at the CWGC site, but can't see a matching set of parents for both boys ( when you ger the search results, if you click on the name of the person concerned you will get additional details (if there are any), such as names of parents and spouse if there was one.

As others have said previously, getting hold of the details on your parents' marriage cert would be the best place to start.

sheba Report 26 Feb 2013 19:58

Hello, I now have my parents marriage certificate. Horace Arthur England married Irene Ada Squires at Gt Clacton Parish Church in the county of Essex on 19.12.1937. Fathers name for Dad was given as Henry England and Fathers name for Mum was Richard Squires. Dad was aged 22 yrs. and Mum was 25 yrs.The addresses for both sets of parents have been recorded on the certificate as living in the Essex area. I know both Mum & Dad were born in London.
I have found a Richard Squires in the 1911 census which is positive as his wife and elder daughter are mentioned. These names all are correct.
There is a Henry England in the Death register 1939 age 73yrs in the Tendring district, this seems a fairly positive lead. I do not know his wife's name or age or the four other children, two boys and two girls. This is what I would like some guidance on if any of you kind folk have some ideas. Kind regards, Sheba.

This is the only Horace A. England birth I can see on Freebmd - you can find it easily here yourself:

Births Jun 1916 (>99%)
England Horace A Partridge Lewisham 1d 2132

brummiejan Report 26 Feb 2013 20:11

Do you have an occupation for Henry England, and what are the addresses? Names of witnesses too please.

brummiejan Report 26 Feb 2013 20:16

Must be Irene? If we had known the names were so unusual might not have advised the marriage cert - though it always pays to be sure.

Births Mar 1912 (>99%)
Squires Irene A Frost Hackney 1b 758

I would think these are likely to be her parents, though you can't tell before 1912 who married who. What was the wife's name for the Richard you found?

brummiejan - so sorry I have mistakenly sent your reply as a report to the Genes team. I do apologise, you must think I am a dim wit. I don't know whether you can retrieve it, but I will re type it here: Henry England's residence was Green Lands, Colchester Road, Thorpe-le-Soken and occupation Builder. Richard Squires residence was Clissold, Main Road, Holland-on-Sea, and occupation Retired. Both addresses are in Essex. The two witnesses were L.W. Self and R. Squires. I do appreciate all your help, it all seems so easy when you come back so quickly with answers. Thanks to everyone. Sheba.
