Well, I just pointed it out Ruth because it does happen a lot, maybe people thought it put a bit of glamour in their family?

When my cousins and I were talking to aunty about g-grandfather she said all the records were wrong because of course she knew her own grandfather (she was 4 when he died) and "he had a funny accent" - well we're geordies and he was from London so he would have sounded funny to her!

I'm starting to wonder if you are right about that Marie as nothing I have found so far or have in family bibles / letters suggests Anne was french.

I also can't find any clues to suggest she might be and am wondering is it just because of the french sounding name which from doing searches therea re many varients of it in the UK ging back years.

Possibly a bit old:

London, England, Deaths and Burials, 1813-1980

Name: Ann Verdon
Record Type: Death
Estimated Death Date: 1890
Parish or Poor Law Union: Stepney St George in the East Union
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Register Type: Parish Register

Died 25 December aged 64.

For place of burial it just says "ELC"

Just a thought about the French connection - my family were adamant that my ggrandfather was French, they claimed to know what part of France he was from. He did have a very French sounding surname (Daubeney) but I've traced the family back (100% verified) and they were from Stratford, London. Perhaps centuries before they may have come from France (haven't got that far yet) but there were Daubeneys in London for a long time. My elderly aunt still refuses to believe the proof - "she knows what she knows".

thats a big clue to look into!
why on earth didn't I check the whole page for Edward's location in 1861....
I'm normally pretty good at that to check for potential relatives.

Annie's name has been confirmed by a few things.

Her son who died at the age of 2 was baptised Edward Verdon Chater.

But th real confirmation came from Emma's birth certificate which does state Annie Verdon as the mother.

I have come across lots of varients of Verdon such as Verden, Verdin and Verdun but not been able to find anything using these versions either,

Annie was either french or had french parents.
Maybe she was born in france which is why hard to find her?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 13 Mar 2013 08:19

Just reading this from a different angle - how was Annie's surname known? Is it from family history, is it from actual birth certificates or is it taken from the children's middle names?

Had a look in the newspaper archives and there are numerous reviews in the 1880s of an Annie Verdon who was a serio-comic singer. Could be a complete coincidence with the name, there's no indication of age although an article from 1878 describes her as playing an old lady.

thats interesting!
How you all find these things I have no idea as I oked on ancestry at the local library yesterday and found very little new.

I will see what I can find out about each of those Combers.

Well, you've been given the marriage info now!

As for Louisa......there is no record of a marriage to Comber

Ruth

Ruth Report 12 Mar 2013 11:42

Annie lived with Edward in 4 Peabody Place, Lion St, Poplar according to the baptism records for child Edward (died aged 2) and daughter Annie Sarah.

I can't find anything for 1871 for Annie, Edward and children Emma and Annie Sarah. Nor can I find anything for Louise or her then husband Mr Comber.

Edward re married after Louises death but I didn't really have much info on that but that daughter Annie did not approve. She was devasted over Louises death.
The above possible record for 1871 and the one for Annie look interesting.

You can find out when Louisa died by using freebmd.

Does the possible marriage to Sarah precede that date? Or follow it?

The cert would confirm whether or not it is for the Edward you are researching, as would the 1901 census
