I am trying to find some info on Isaac Clarke who is father of John Clarke b1848 in Alburgh, Norfolk. John was married to Hannah Gower b Denton 1848. On their marriage cert. John's father is down as Isaac Clarke and Hannah's father as Samuel Gower, but there are so many Isaac Clarke's born same area and time I don't seem able to find an Isaac who has a son John.
Any help would be appreciated please as I am completely stuck.

It has to be Clarke with an 'e'. Also needs to be Alburgh not Aldborough, date may be a year out.
John is father of Stephen F Clarke, sometimes down as Frederick S. Clarke b 1871 Wortwell, Norfolk.

The 1881 Census is correct but it is John's father Isaac I am trying to find, he is down on their marriage certificate as being John's father. I have found various Isaac Clarke's but none of them have a son John being about the right age and being married to Pamela Hannah Gower, sometimes down as Hannah Pamela Gower.

Thanks for all your help but I think I will have to keep looking as I cannot find an Isaac Clarke with a son John to match with the family I have.
I have looked on the norfolk website but no good. Thanks anyway to all of you.

What was Isaac's occupation listed as on the marriage cert?

BeverleyW

BeverleyW Report 17 Mar 2013 17:37

Alan, do not rule anyone out just because they are spelled 'Clark' instead of 'Clarke'. Spelling of surnames was not an exact science in those days and a very large percentage of people didn't even know how to spell their names.

Hi Chris, yes I have the marriage details of John and Hannah but its John's father Isaac I need to find out more about and possibly details of his spouse but there are quite a few Isaac's around the area and am unable to find a family where Isaac is head with spouse and children including John with the right age.

K - Isaac's occupation was Labourer

Don't close your mind to the possibility of a different spelling...................you MUST be flexible in your thinking

The census enumerators wrote the names as they heard them.

Alan Patrick

Alan Patrick Report 21 Mar 2013 13:39

In the 1881 Census they were living at Low Rd. Wortwell but they married in 1871 so could have moved by the 1881 Census
