Find Ancestors

My gr great grandmother Agnes Lee born Glasgow c1841 to Robert Lee "carpet twister" and Elizabeth Balfour ran away to Utah to join the mormons around 1884-1886 from Glasgow. She left my grandmother Hannah Lee who was aged around 16 or 17 at the time to fend for herself. We all asumed Hannahs parents were John Lee "joiner" and Agnes Balfour but we could never trace a birth. Finally traced one for Hannah Lee born 18 March 1868 to Agnes Lee, she was "illigitimate"

Obviousely Hannah lied about her parentage, not wanting to admit she was illigitmate. So!! what happened to my g g great grandparents Robert Lee born Glasgow and Elizabeth Balfour born Stirling, no trace of them after 1851.

Agnes is listed on the 1841 aged 5months and on the 1851 she has a sister Janet.

Agnes and Janet appear together on the 1861 and 1871 doing the same jobs. No sign of either of them after this..Any help of how to trace Agnes in Utuah will be gratefull :-D

Definately them in the 1871 census, as 26 George St is where Hannah was born...

But where is everyone after this???

Not found Hannah anywhere in 1871

I can't see her either GB. Tried searching with just Hannah (no Surname) and Lee (no christian name)

I am also wondering how much a Paper Bag Maker in Glasgow would know much about Mormanism in the 1880s or 1890s. Were they sending missionaries over here as early as that?

They claim a Hannah Lee b 1868 in Clyde district of Lanarkshire but not at the moment finding it on Ancestry

Mmm wondering why Hannah is listed on the 1871 census with strangers, perhaps mother Agnes was working that night and left her daughter with freinds, King St and George St werent too far away..Or!! was she staying with her father James Maclin, since there seems to be a discrepancy with Hannahs surname Machlin?? Dont suppose we will never know! Yes!! I have tried looking for deaths for Agnes Lee, Janet Lee and both parents Robert Lee and Elizabeth Balfour!! did they all go to Utah and join the mormons?? :-S
