Yes, you have mentioned it before... but you do understand a lot! You maybe able to go on these genealogy sites, but you still need to work out the connections, dates, who's who, etc... quite a bit of skill involved!

It's possible there is a link between Mary Ann Ford nee Preston and the Bennett family, but it's very tentative.

The witnesses at the Ford-Shepheard marriage were William Benjamin Taylor and Catherine Taylor.

?????

Name: William Benjamin Taylor - smith<<<<<<<
Age: Full Age
Spouse Name: Catherine Preston
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 21 Mar 1850
Parish: Shoreditch St Leonard
Borough: Hackney
Father Name: Joseph Taylor - smith <<<<<
Spouse Father Name: John Preston bricklayer <<<<<<
Register Type: Parish Register

So Catherine Taylor might be Mary Ann's sister.

William Benjamin Taylor's baptism???

Name: William Benjamin Taylor
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 6 Dec 1829
Father's Name: Joseph Taylor
Mother's name: Elizabeth Taylor
Parish or Poor Law Union: St George the Martyr
Borough: Southwark
Register Type: Parish Registers

Father Joseph a smith.

There is a possible marriage for Joseph and an Elizabeth BENNETT.

Name: Joseph Taylor
Spouse Name: Elizabeth Bennett
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 15 Aug 1808
Parish: Newington St Mary
Borough: Southwark
Register Type: Parish Register

or an Eliza Bennett

Name: Joseph Taylor
Spouse Name: Eliza Bennett
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 18 Apr 1809
Parish: Lambeth St Mary
Borough: Lambeth
Register Type: Parish Register

However no way yet of directly linking them to the family of John Bennett and wife Mary Ann, even assuming one of the marriages for Joseph Taylor is the correct one..

Belt & braces!!!

Census 1851 confirms yet again Eliza's birthplace as Lambeth c1828.

It also confirms William's birthplace as St Andrew, Holborn, as per the baptism posted earlier on this page.

and yet another household at the same address:

SHEPHERD, William Son M 6 1855 Scholar Middlesex
SHEPHERD, John Son M 4 1857 Scholar Middlesex
FORD, Mary A P Daughter F 1 1860 Middlesex

I can't see a direct link between this last household and the two Bennett households as yet; Mary Ann's maiden name appears to be Preston (according to the actual register image) on her marriage to Alfred Ford:

Name: Mary Ann Shepheard - widow
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1821
Age: 38
Spouse Name: Alfred Lane Ford
Spouse Age: 32
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 23 May 1859
Parish: Shoreditch St James

John and Rebecca were at 11 Seward St in 1851, when William and Eliza were living in Nelson street as posted previously.

They were sharing No 11 with another household, that of William and Rosina Ludford.

There was a Rosina Bennett at the address in the 1841 census. Rosina married William Ludford.

John Bennett is a smith, William an apprentice smith.

Given the presence of two people with the surname King, could this be the marriage of John and William Benjamin's parents, John [Benjamin] and Mary Ann?

Incidently, I think this might be the marriage of John Bennett and Rebecca, as a 59 single woman described as 'sister' called Harriet Dodds was listed with John and Rebecca's household at 11 Seward St in 1871.

Name: John Benjamin Bennett - coach smith<<<<<<<
Age: Full Age
Spouse Name: Rebecca Mary Dodds
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 19 May 1850
Parish: Finsbury St Barnabas
Borough: Islington
Father Name: John Benjamin Bennett - coachsmith<<<<<<
Spouse Father Name: William Dodds - cordwainer
Register Type: Parish Register

Both bride and groom gave Seward St as their address, Harriet Dodds was one witness, George Edward Dodds the other.

EDIT: William Edward Bennett born Nov 1852, and Rebecca Harriet Bennett born
July 1857, were both baptised on 28 Aug 1859. Their parents were listed as John and Rebecca Mary Bennett, and their address given as 11 Seward St. Father a smith.

Name: Rebecca Harriet Bennett
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 28 Aug 1859
Father's Name: John Bennett
Mother's name: Rebecca Mary Bennett

Borough: Islington

GlitterBaby posted a death for William Benjamin Bennett registered in the first qtr of 1869, on page 1 of this thread, which would tally with Eliza being a widow in census 1871.

I checked the image for census 1871, and found she was living at No 11 Seward St, the same address as the family were living at in 1861.

There was another household sharing No 11; it comprised 53 yr old John Bennett born Clerkenwell, wife Rebecca, son William and daur, also a Rebecca. Father and son were smiths. A sister called Harriet Dodds was living with John and Rebecca's family.

EDIT: I also went back and checked the image for census 1861. Both households were living at 11 Seward St then, too. John and Rebecca's family were at the bottom of one census page, with an older son, John G, plus Harriet Dodds. William, 'Clara' and family were at the top of the next census page.

People often moved around within the same street , perhaps as better accomodation or cheaper rents elsewhere came up.

Ok thanks for ALL this info, especially to you Kucinta, you have been very helpful, brill actually! On the Birth C has them down as living at number 10 Seward St, so, where did this number 11 Seward St come from, perhaps they moved next door... lol All for now, very interesting!!! I've learned a lot tonight!

Yes, Eliza either married or lived with William Benjamin Bennett as his wife, then married William Barton in 1874 in the marriage I posted on page one.

Kucinta Report 17 Mar 2013 00:36

I believe William Benjamin Bennett either married or at least lived as man and wife and raised a family with Eliza Ann Lockett, daughter of John Lockett a hatter and his wife named Sarah.

i believe that the Sarah Collins-John Lockett marriage is a good possibilty with regard to timing of the births of the children of John the hatter, and also location, but can't be totally certain.
