Hi Alison, I think the main thing to establish is which of the two Fanny Jacob's is the correct one.

It's quite a coincidence that there were two of the same name born a couple of years apart in Canada, and they both married men called Frank. But they are two different women.

Re Gins's 1881: Where born: For (U S), North America
The enumerator has just entered pob=North America - some tally clerk has entered US For.

I think this is the index record for Fanny's b.cert:

First Name:FANNY
Last Name:JACOBS
Year Range:1866

Probably these were her sibs:

1861 Worldwide Army Index Transcription has a couple of entries for the same George #550
First Name:George
Last Name:Jacobs
Year:1861
Unit Or Regiment:47th Foot (Lancashire)
Rank:Private
Soldier Number:550
Regiment Stationed at:Dover Dublin & Ship

The other only differs in:
Unit Or Regiment:47th Foot (Lancashire) Depot
Regiment Stationed at:Athlone

George's service record shows 21 y of service, ending in Oct 1881, and includes service in Montreal; Ontario (Kingston, London, Hamilton); Halifax between 1864 and 1869.Early in 1869, he arrived in the West Indies, and spent nearly a year there, then, in 1870, they were back in Ireland. The rest of George's service was in the UK, but it doesn't look like he was in England until late 1871, so his 1861/71 Irish censuses will be lost. His attestation on 11/6/1860 says he's 19 y.o, from Romsey, Hants, so he most likely is on the 6/6/1841 census as well as 1851:

Alison, just to clarify - there's nothing to say that your friend Lisa's ancestor Fanny had the same name parents as the one who married Frank Farnsworth and stayed in the US.

The info that mgnv has found looks very promising but she needs to get the marriage cert of Fanny to Frank Mould. Can order online from GRO, will cost about 13.5 AUD
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp (Gins has posted the record above with all the necessary references)

If the Mould's are the correct ancestors for Lisa then I'm happy to forward those newspaper articles on, just send me a pm with an email address and I'll forward them (the file sizes might be a bit too big to send via GR message system). Having said that, he sounds like a bit of a bad lad so she might not want them!

mgnv Report 18 Mar 2013 22:36

I agree with MC - you need Fanny's m.cert.
Assuming it names George, I looked for a Geo Jacobs - Mary ? marr in Ireland (Mary's pob).
I didn't see one, but Irish BMDs only really began in 1864 - before that, non-RC marrs were registered back to 1845.

Search Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958 at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND

One can purchase certs (or cheaper still, the uncertified images of the rego) via:
http://www.groireland.ie/

The Irish 1901/1911 censuses are free at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
[Not heard of any release dates for next census (=1926 in both Irelands)]

Most City of Dublin parish registers are free online at:
http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/

So, to find out Mary's name, you'll need Fanny's b.cert, again from the GRO (as an overseas event).

Again, assuming George is relevant, I think this is his b.cert index entry.
Births Jun 1841 (>99%)
Jacobs George Romsey 7 150

Actually, I think George is relevant, and Fanny's named after her gran, but it really is worth spending the $$ to avoid the aggro of wasting your time on strangers.
