Maybe dad wanted a Harriet, but mother registered her as Jane - or visa versa. Who knows what went through our ancestors thoughts (without the crystal ball). But I can't see any other explanation.

But of course will stand corrected if someone can find anything else.

I think you are right Flip. The birth looks like Jane, if that is so it seems rather odd for her parents to call her Harriet! But there is no other explanation as far as I can see.

Has anyone had a better look at Harriet?

There is no birth reg 1855-60 that I can see, yet they registered their other children. She disappears after the 1881 census but no marriage or death. Brother Charles is back with his father in 1891, but Harriet is not with them or sister Fanny Green, I can't find her on any subsequent census. Nor can I see anything on immigration records.

Very much a mystery, but I would be pretty convinced that Harriet is Jane.

In 1881 Harriet is a winder in cotton mill, so if she is Jane this could explain the move to Lancashire where there was lots of work in the cotton mills.

I totally agree with you - what a mystery! The only other thing I can suggest is to risk getting that birth cert just to be sure.

I have found William and Jemima but no Jane with them. William is a sawyer if that helps. They are on census 1851 onwards so no question that Jemima re-married after Jane was born.

well didn't she become Jane Shorrocks? and could Mary be a daughter of hers?
