The name change theory is looking more and more likely. I am not surprised given the number of variants. From this thread alone I have copied - Mackelword Mackelwroth Mackelroth Mackelwrouth Mackelworth MacKlesworth Machlesworth Macrelworth.

There are even more in my other thread in General Chat.

Thank you everyone for your massive efforts in this.

Yep that is definately Sarah their daughter.

Still no success in finding the parents. I am more convinced they must of died now, even if the father wasn't put as deceased on the marriages of his children.

It might be worth ordering the death cert to the Sarah above somewhere, that some e posted, to at least rule out. You should be able to confirm by informant.

CS

Your 0320 of today shows the family Wooding. My grandfather Charles' military record shows his next of kin as "Sister Mrs Wooding 219 (or 269) Old Ford Road Bow". This was on a Military History sheet started 16/12/1902. The next of kin hadn't been amended so that date is pretty certain.

John and Sarahs son Robert marries in 1883, he doesnt states his father as deceased on his marriage cert, occupation is cigar maker still.

their son William marries in 1890 and he also doesnt list his father as deceased for marriage cert. Occupation still down as cigar maker. - surname Mackelwrouth

Only trouble is, they may just not of stated he was deceased.

has anyone located John and Sarah's daughter - Jessie?

I can't find her after 1871 either, so perhaps she is wherever her parents are.

Just having a look for any Mackelworths on the 1841, and notice a lot of faded pages for Bethnal Green which are too faint to read.

Islington is up City Road from Bethnal Green and next to Hackney geographically. The name is a stretch but then most of the variations we have had have been dodgy and one or two quite outrageous.

The age is close and it is between 1871 and 1881. Hmmm...

Military records for my grandfather Charles, the son of the missing John and Sarah, show his mother and father dead in 1902 and a sister as next of kin. In the earliest military record I have (at the moment I haven't looked through them all) his 1889 attestation shows brother Robert as next of kin.

So more suggestions that they might have died?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 18 May 2013 18:23

Looking at the image of the Notley/Mackelworth marriage record:

Sarah was a minor at the time, and her father was William, an engineer.

According to the census records, she was born in Harwich, Essex.

Still can't find her, nor her father.

No, they're not there, neither in censuses nor deaths, searching for variant spellings.
