Hi all.. chasing detail on Thomas Crosby, 1801 - 1882, a sail and rope manufacturers, at 7 North Wall Quay and Sir John Rogerson Quay, Dublin, lived at 62 Amiens St . 3 times Great Grandfather of my wife,
I've seen a note of an Obit. in the 'Cork Examiner' of the 15th of April 1882.. No idea of how to locate a copy of same.
Would be most appreciative of any advices re such, or of Thomas himself, his wife ( unknown) and parents.
My Wife's line is via his daughter Eliza ( or Elizabeth) 1836 - 1873 who married a Joseph 'John' Lanigan, 1818-1878, owner of a Rope & Twine manufacturing business in Dublin. Their two young orphaned children, Ann & John, aged 7 & 8, went out to Australia in 1880, aboard the 'Potosi' but.... No idea who accompanied or fostered them.. lots of questions in this one but it's a new line of inquiry to me of which there is negligible detail in this branch of their descendants. Thanks all.

Hi Gins.. John Joseph, born 16/2/1872 Dublin, married to Elizth Broadhead.. Yes,that's right, son of Joseph"John" Frederick Lanigan & Eliza Crosby.. detail of marriage & death certs matchs but stll, no clues as to who accompanied the orphaned 8 year old John Joseph & his 7 year old sister, Ann Jane Mary Lanigan, out to Australia in 1880.. so query remains..

This would be the obit you were referring to

CROSBY, Thomas; 80; Dublin DUB IRL; Cork Examiner (COR IRL); 1882-4-15; dja

Although indexed the details are not avaliable as yet on line....you would need to get a copy of the original or hope someone could get access to the newspaper archives...

Apologies for delay in responding have had several weeks away & just now catching up. Many thanks Eringobragh 1916 for your advices. The 40 Amiens St address is interesting as we know Thomas of Thomas Crosby & Son, sail and rope manufacturers, lived at 62 Amiens St. and is ref'd to as Captain in documents of son James Joseph Crosby. Added to that is a Royal Navy Reserve list which records a Thomas Crosby, Seniority in Merchant Navy 03/04/1826 with date promoted to Hon Lieut. 26/08/1862. Later, there are also said to be records with Thomas as Marine Superintendant, Dublin Board of Trade but not seen those.
Re the Probate of Joseph Frederick Lanigan. 1880, Document Number: 024 . Volume Number: 140 .. I've also seen Ireland, Calendar of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1920
other: Thomas Richard Crosby
Name Joseph Frederick Lanigan
Event Type Probate
Event Date 29 Mar 1878
Event Place Dublin
Beneficiary's Name Thomas Richard Crosby

Hoped someone might be able to advise the process of sighting any Will, determining what the estate was that went to Probate... Many Thanks

Thanks Marie Celeste.. Ref the sale advertisement..that's all great new detail that helps fill the gap from when Joseph Frederick Lanigan died in 1878 & his father in-law disposed of his estate then shipped the now orphaned Lanigan children to Australia in 1880. Would be interesting to see the probate, to understand what sort of Estate Joseph Frederick Lanigan left in Thomas Crosby's hands..
The birth & Business address details, Eccles & Eden Qy, agree with what other detail we have.
