This is my great grandfather, does anyone know of him in their family tree. He married a lady by the name of Fanny Hill. He was a harbour forman at that time. but was previously a coal porter and lived in Battersea by the river.

There are far too many clarks for wild guesses and I have tried unsuccessfully to find anything for the clark family. Can you help?

thank you Carol

Just to clarify - on George and Fanny's marriage record his occupation is stated as Labourer, not harbour foreman (or was that in 1901?). He gave address as Ealing Lane and father George was also a labourer.

MC, In 1901 he is a wharf foreman at harbour

Ah... as you probably guess I am very new to this. so apologies for reply sent direct.

Yes he is the George Clark mentioned by Dea and Jude.

I know a lot about my grandmother Jane ( his daughter) but nothing of either side of the family the Hill or the Clark side.

I was told that my grandmother had lost a brother who drown in the Thames, but this too only family heresay and not proven. Thank you to those who have started me on the correct trail. If any one has a photograph or any documentation I would be happy to share what I have on Jane - including her being put into service record

1881 shows the same family at Ealing Road (address on the marriage cert) - George Jnr. is no longer with them.

Going by the father's name on the marriage record, this could be Fanny's baptism:

London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906

Name: Fanny Hill
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 25 Oct 1857 - born 12 June
Father's Name: Jesse Hill - Labourer
Mother's Name: Jane Hill
Parish or Poor Law Union: Old Brentford St George
Borough: Hounslow
Register Type: Parish Registers

Lived Old Brentford

Dea

Dea Report 30 Jun 2013 11:16

The 1911 census shows that George and Fanny had had 10 children - 2 of whom had died before that census was taken.

Have to go and start the lunch but will have a look for them later unless anyone else has found them in the meantime.

If the 1911 stated 10 children born and only 8 still alive then one must have died between 1901 and 1911. (There are the 8 on the 1901 census plus Jessie must have been around somewhere).

If it was a brother who drowned then could that be George or Samuel?

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 30 Jun 2013 11:48

To collate for Dea's return!!!

Known children

Jessie 1881
Caroline 1882
Florence 1884
Sarah 1888
George 1889
Samuel 1891
Jane 1893
Maud 1895

Then in 1901 Amy born 1899 but in 1911 Mary Ann born 1899 - and Am appears to precede Mary and is crossed out :-S

Florence appears to be one of the children who died?

So assuming Amy/Mary Ann are one and same we are missing a child - presumably who was born and died between censuses....and there's a gap between Florence and Sarah that could do with filling??

Jude

Jude, I've got lost! How is Florence one of the ones that died?
