how common was it to record the wifes maiden name wrongly on the marriage cert
the only one I can find that could possibly be the one I want has the same surname for the groom and the bride... eg the brides .(.maiden name) is given as the grooms surname
do not want to spend to get cert if this is not likely to have happened
can anybody tell me if people have the same great grandparents what is their relationship .
I have seen charts on here to work it out but it is just being impossible for me to figure it out
I am stupid I know

2nd Cousins?

As to the names on the MC. Anything is possible although in your instance, if they had been living together for a number of years, she may have taken her partners surname.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 30 Jun 2013 19:35

It's also possible that the bride and groom were related, I've got a few instances of cousins and second cousins marrying (perfectly legal).

ErikaH Report 30 Jun 2013 19:47

So.............your grandfather.

The father of one of your parents.................which one?

Do you have his/her birth cert?

The surname of a female spouse on a marriage index is not necessarily her maiden name.

She could have been married before....................

Does the forename on the index match what you know of your grandmother?

MarieCeleste Report 30 Jun 2013 19:47

Keith, we could try to help you further if you want to give the details, it's up to you.

If you only have the information from the marriage index have you checked to see if the marriage is recorded twice - once with the female's maiden name and again with the female registered with the groom's surname. This is sometimes the case if the couple have been living together prior to the marriage and the female was known by the groom's surname even though they were not married. Because she was known by both names, both are recorded.

Susan

Not sure why you have added to this thread................your post is not in any way connected with the subject matter.

You really need to return to your own posts about the Turners, and respond on there.

hi
sorry no reply genes reunited would not let me on just kept getting a message saying unavalible
seems okay now though
I put this on because I wanted to order a marriage cert for my Ggrandmother and father (sorry forgot to put the great in original post)
a very kind person called Alviegal found their marriage for me in parish records collection
it has grooms last name Griffiths first names John William
grooms fathers name William Griffiths
brides last name Jones (this is not the maiden name of my great grandma)hers was Roberts
brides first name Margaret
brides fathers first name William
brides fathers name Griffiths
the ages and the parish are the correct ones but before I sent for the certificate I was wondering if it was conmmon to have mistakes on certificates from 1868 in records for Anglesey
the parish of llanerchymedd is correct
but I cannot understand the surnames of the bride and father as it should be Roberts
if I send for the certificate and this is the info on it I will never know if I have the right one
I have looked in free bmd but cannot find a Griffiths who married a Roberts
hope you can understand my rambling
thanks

Is it possible that Margaret had been married before to a Jones or that her mother was a Jones and had Margaret before she married Mr Griffith

thanks for replys .this is a real mystery to me
I remember my grandmother Lizzie the daughter of John and Margaret Griffiths saying her mums name was Roberts
her maiden name is given as Roberts so I am stumped as where to go on this one
maybe she or her mum were married before but I have no way of knowing
or maybe her (Margarets)mum was not married when Margaret was born
but then I do not know why my grandmother would have said her mother was Roberts before she married
well a mystery to try to solve
when searching family history you think you have got there then something comes along to show you have not
but I suppose that is half the fun
PS what do people think the best site to join Ancestry or Find My Past

are you sure you have the right details Keith?

Do you have your grandmother Lizzie's birth certificate to prove her parents names?

perhaps this was the marriage not the one with John William

It wasn't uncommon for a cert to have a mistake. One only has o look at the number of times certificates get amended in later quarters to realize this. It's a lot harder to convince yourself that you do have the correct cert, but it has an error of some sort.
My ggg gran's 1873 d.cert gives her name as Christina instead of Elizabeth. The other details matched: age, husband, parents - and her death was rego'ed by her son.First I checked he was my ggg gran's son - I only saw him on the 1841 census, and thought he died, so stopped looking for him, but now I knew he lived in Turriff in W Aberdeenshire, I found both his d.cert and gravestone - both give his mum as Elizabeth - my Eliz is buried with her son, and the gravestone gives her dod as 21/7/1873, the day "Christina" died.

So - mistakes happen.

A useful site for Anglesey is their local BMD indexes at http://www.northwalesbmd.org.uk/

There are mo transcriptons of marr records held by Isle of Anglesey - Llangefni.
The only Anglesey deaths transcribed as yet seem to be for Bodedern 1837-1842 - unlike the GRO index, they do show age at death.

EDIT re Perry's pob - forgot to enter this - now corrected

thank you to all who have helped
I am going to start from scratch again
ask all family members to try to remember what they can and then forget everything I have and start again as something is not adding up
the postings have names for siblings that look like I have heard them before but then looking at census info the same few names seem to crop up for Griffiths
the post of ngmv is interesting as there were certainly twins in the family
my grandmother had twins as did my sister
so as I said I will scrap everything and start again
will probably be on here again asking for help at some point
am very grateful for all info thank you
