Douglas, If George Thomas Cole was the adopted son of William Hellyar then would he not also adopt the surname Hellyar?

I would imagine his name is down as Cole because that's how the enumerator heard it when told his name was Cowell?

Potty

Potty Report 13 Jul 2013 17:09

There is a public tree on Ancestry for Florence - it has a photo of her death cert. There is no mention of her son George.

George Thomas Cowell was born on 12th March 1897, was registered in the sub district of Westoe in South Shields, Mothers name was Florence Mary Cowell, there is no mention of a father on the birth certificate but found that she may have emigarted to Australia, I will continue to search.

Douglas, there doesn't seem to be any "may" about it! Florence Mary Cowell did go to Australia - see jax's post above.

There is a tree on Ancestry that has loads of info about her, including photos (she was extremely pretty). If you're not a member of Ancestry you can search and view trees on their spin-off site Mundia http://www.mundia.com/gb/
You have to register but it's free.

Florence Mary Cowell is not on the 1901 census so I presume that she left the country and went to Australia, any more info woud be great

Douglas Report 14 Jul 2013 14:56

With reference to londonbelle I am waiting for a marriage certificate from South Shields for George Thomas Hellyar, hopefully it will have his fathers full name on it, will keep you informed when I receive it.

Douglas, Have you not read the posts above? by Jax and others, Londonbelle, Potty and MarieCeleste

jax 13 Jul 2013 16:52 Florence Marriage to Arthur William Pearce190017 Nov Age: 26Calcutta, West Bengal,

Jax 13 Jul 2013 16:53 Her death in 1939 in Australia Death Index, 1787-1985

I don't have ancestry world wide anymore but Florence should appear on the Australian electoral rolls up until her death

jax Report 14 Jul 2013 15:15

His mother was in India in 1901 they did not go to Australia until approx 1914

If there was no father on his birth cert there is unlikely to be one on his marriage cert...unless he made one up or used his adopted fathers name

Jax, I've sent Douglas another message, from his replies on this page I have a feeling the replies refer to posts on page one? so I don't think he has read page two yet?

I have read page 2 and found the info that you sent from jax. been onto a site called Mundia .com and found more info about Florence Mary Cowell, don't take it too hard as I am just feeling my way around this site..many thanks any way

Douglas

Douglas Report 15 Jul 2013 15:03

My grandfather took his adopted surname as it shows on his marriage certificate which I have just received today.

Potty

Potty Report 15 Jul 2013 16:42

Does anyone else think that is a bit of a coincidence that George Cowell b South Shields, whose mother came from Cornwall was adopted by a Cornish man who married in South Shields in the same year that George was born? I have a feeling that there is some connection between William Hellyar and Florence Cowell but haven't been able to find it.

Douglas, it might be a good idea to get the 1897 marriage cert to see if Mary Jane had been married before, as there seems to be no sign of her on the census or bmd under Smaller.

LondonBelle

LondonBelle Report 15 Jul 2013 17:09

Yes, Potty I agree with you......I've been looking to see whether I could see any connection between the Cowell's and Hellyar's in Cornwall but like you haven't found anything yet!

Douglas

Douglas Report 16 Jul 2013 11:25

I will try the 1897 to see the marriage certificate as suggested
