The newspaper article is from the Brooklyn Union, 1883. It basically says that he had fallen into the river from the Battery pier at 7:30 p.m., had been attended by an ambulance surgeon but refused to go to hospital and his friends took him home in a coach. At 11:00 p.m. that night a doctor was called but Edward died before the doctor arrived.

Hi Irene,

No date.(Actually when you see the newspaper page it's a little ragged but obviously between Christmas and New Year's Day.)

Are you doing as I suggested?

Have you been able to see the uploaded pdf page?

If so...try mid-way down the third to last column of the page.

I'm not sure what else to suggest. :-)

I keep trying to find what I saw on this site:

but I think they are doing some work on it at the moment.

IF it works again-just input Edward Perks with exact phrase ticked.

The second to last citation is your fellow.

Hi
Thanks all for the info.
I have been in touch with the Greenwood cemetery and they have given me the burial plot number and his date of death but the New York Archives could not find a death cert for him so don't know where he died except the cemetery people were able to tell me it was an accidental death. Looks like he had a son also Edward Richard Perks who died aged 3 yrs 29 days and is also buried at Greenwood but I would have to pay to find out more details for him which I may have to consider later.

Thank you for all the directory info and the marriage info. If he was in the US five years before his naturalization you would think that he would be on a census somewhere.

I appreciate all the help very much. Thanks.

The manslaughter incident sounds like a terrible accident

Publication:Berkshire Chronicle
Publication date:Saturday 15 February 1862

Article text:
Edward Perks, a druggist's assistant at Lichfield, has been committed for trial for manslaughter, but bailed in £600, for labelling "Ethiop's mineral" as "Turpeth's," whereby a farmer named Winter came by his death, he having taken it as medicine.

(There were numerous similar reports)

Hi all,

Thank you very much for this info. Great to see all this interesting information and it helps to fill in some of the gaps. Thats great to have a baptism, marriage and naturalization info. Interesting about the manslaughter acquittal. Maybe that is why they left Birmingham. I appreciate your kindness in helping me out.
