Sally, just found all this interesting detail re Eliza and Ellen Bibby. I am also a direct descendant of Eliza through her illegitimate daughter, Ellen.
I think they were both feisty ladies to survive their lives in the mid 1800's and how proud they would be to know how their present day descendants have fared

Sorry, should have looked for when Harriet died. This looks like Phillips birth registration, it should hopefully give mothers maiden name,

Thanks for that BatMansDaughter, but Eliza Bibby's mother (Harriet) had already died by then (in 1846).

Thanks for the church information Diamonds-R-A-Girls-Best-Friend, I will have to widen my search of the Essex Records Office to surrounding villages, as I can't find a marriage of James Bibby to a Harriet in Great Horkesley from around 1826 onwards (this is when James's first wife Sarah Church had her last baby - and presumably died a short-ish while later - although I can't find her burial details in Great Horkesley either).

To recap on what I now know:
- My direct ancestor Eliza Bibby was baptised in Great Horkesley, Essex 1832
- Eliza's mother, Harriet Bibby, was buried in Great Horkesley in 1846.
- Eliza and her father and siblings were living with her elder half-sister Mary Constable in 1851 census in Mile End (Myland) Colchester.
- Eliza's mother was the 2nd 'wife' of James Bibby - although yet to find their marriage details, or the 1st wife's death details. Suspicious!

And what I still need to find:
- I'd like to find out her mother (Harriet) surname, no luck yet, nor for her marriage (if at all) to James Bibby, Eliza's father.
- I need to search further through the Essex Records Office to now investigate Eliza's father, James Bibby and his ancestors. I took out a week's subscription to the ERO, I'd better get my skates on!

Sally

Yes I have a sub as my maternal line come from Essex and I wouldn't be without it.

There isn't much free online for the County, as you have found out, and the only way I had to research was to visit the Essex RO. Now when I get the chance to go there I have the time to view real documents rather than crank the microfilm readers for parish registers.

To be honest a years sub works out cheaper than my staying near the RO for a few days.

Thank you Chris - is this something you have a subscription for? Could be a fascinating resource. Just looking at the free stuff at the moment, for Bibby generally. Very interesting. Thanks very much for the tip off!

The Parish Registers for Essex are available through a subscription site. They are not indexed.

I have had a quick look and it appears James may have married more than once.

I have received Eliza Bibby and Timothy Verlander's marriage certificate 8 Jan 1866, Colchester Register Office. Her father is James Bibby, and one witness is Charlotte Durrant, who I've traced as Eliza's sister. So BatMansDaughter is right that the 1851 family contains my Eliza Bibby.

Now onto the next step of finding out more about Eliza's mother, "Harriet" from the 1841 census, so I can find out her surname. I found a marriage of a James Bibby, Great Horkesley, Essex to a Sara Church in 1818... but no Harriets. Having difficulty finding any parish register details of any of the Bibby children (and thereby details of their mother). Any suggestions - although I guess it might be time to get down to wherever the Essex parish registers are held, if they're not online anywhere?

Thanks everyone.

Great sleuthing BatMansDaughter! This looks definitely like the same family from 1841! Thank you, I'll now have more of an investigation of the rest of that family while I wait for Eliza Bibby and Timothy Verlander's marriage certificate.
Thanks everyone!

There's an Eliza Bibby age 11 in 1851 census, born Gt Horkesley, Essex - so that would make her born about 1840. She is from a different family from my suspected 1841 family (parents James and Harriett):

Robert Bibby 37
Simon Whiles 16
Mary Ann Bibby 13
Eliza Bibby 11
Jane Bibby 9
Maria Bibby 7
Mary Whalen 66
Anne Harland 40

You REALLY do need that marriage cert. which would hopefully give the name and occupation of her father.

The witnesses also may help as they are ofter family members.

Hi Mel Fairy Codmother - I've just google-mapped Nayland, Great Horkesley and Myland/Mile End in Colchester. And they are all in a line, as you say, not very far from one another. This makes it so hard to be sure of anything, doesn't it!

Myland an alternative to the original "Mile End" is a civil parish in Essex, England that is now a suburb of Colchester. The original village was located approximately one mile north of the middleborough, or the centre of the Borough of Colchester. It probably acquired its name from its distance from the centre of Colchester.

Great Horkesley is a small village approximately 3 miles north of Colchester in the county of Essex, UK, and is part of the borough of Colchester.

The two villages are only a mile or so apart, I wouldn't discount Eliza being from somewhere in between the two and "Myland" being the better known place to mention at census time or the family having moved when she was younger and she thought she was from Myland when asked herself.
