John McCallum was a baker from Campbeltown, Argyll in the 1940's. The youngest of 5 children I believe. He was born in 1901, and appears on the Scotland 1901 census. I am not 100% this is the information for the person i am seeking though. There seems to be a bit of confusion in the birth dates. I got this information from the local library, he was definitely a baker in Campbeltown I know that for sure.
Is there anyone else searching this person.

Just going by the info that Elizabeth has given, these are the censuses that fit and he appears to be the youngest of 5 children.

How do you know he has Calderwood as a middle name as how do you think you are connected to him please?

Thanks for the replies. Iooking at my notes and I have the exact same list for the McCallum family as in the second list above, we believe Calderwood was maybe his mother's maiden name.

This appears to be James christening, can't find any others.

The younger Euphemia is a granddaughter of Archibald and Catherine


Obviously the John in the 1901 census above was not born in 1903 and a birthday in September would not match with being 1 month old in 1901 (family members who registered deaths of someone born in that era commonly had their year of birth wrong but would be more likely to have their birthday right).

Do you know who registered his death and what their relationship was, and any other information it gives about him, for instance his occupation?

If you don't have that death certificate, assuming it is your man, that is where you need to start.

........ the only way to find out who registered the death in 1993 is to get the death certificate!

I believe the certificate should show the deceased's residence at birth so if it was his home address that could be checked on the electoral roll (as Reggie said in the thread he linked to above, the electoral roll has to be consulted at the library and can only be searched by address).

This seems the only way you are going to find out anything about the person who died in 1993.

if you search at scotlandspeople for births with surname McCallum given name Calderwood born in 1903 there is one match. Actually I made the given name 'john calderwood' and there is the same one match.

Narrowing the search, it was in Argyll.
Narrowing it further it was in Campbelltown.

That is the person who died in 1993 in Surrey, it would seem quite sure.

That is the family of the John Calderwood McCallum who died in 1993 in Surrey, to a virtual certainty, I would say.



ah, I see rootgatherer was spending a credit to find the John Calderwood McCallum birth I found by process of elimination :-)

Just had an odd credit left so no problem using it to check for the birth.

I would still advise that Elizabeth spends some money on credits to work back from John. £7 would easily get his birth and parents marriage registrations and either the birth or death registrations for the parents. Or indeed the marriages for his grandparents.

Looking at the 1871 census, there are at least 3 possibles for John McCallum b abt.1866.

This 1891 census may be helpful but again without getting certain facts from Scotlandspeople, I wouldn't like to send you off on a wild goose chase.
