He was certainly the only other one available

Davis is a Surgeon and the neighbours in Chancery Lane are all barristers and solicitors and their servants it seems

that Benjamin strong could possibly have been a gardener ...

Mary Report 14 Jan 2014 19:59

Benjamin Strong christened 27/12/1811 son of James and Mary nee Phillips married 29/6/1802.

info off tree on ancestry so please check,it has Benjamin marrying Agness Smale 1842 and that his dad was James a tailor on the marriage record.
James born 1781-1877 and Mary 1780.

I should not post when I went without my afternoon coffee

Marriages Sep 1842
MARTIN Agness Okehampton 10 257
SMALE Agress Okehampton 10 257
STRONG Benjamin Okehampton 10 257

TWO Agnesses in that marriage list, how unlucky can you be !

since nobody questioned my good sense there I thought I should impugn it myself :-)

Agness Smale in 1841 still seems the most likely for the 1842 marriage

Name: Agness Smale
Age: 25
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1816
Where born: Devon, England
Civil Parish: Okehampton
a servant

and this would seem like the most likely Agnes Martin in 1841

Name: Agness Martin
Age: 26
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1815
Where born: Devon, England
Civil Parish: Poughill
County/Island: Devon
Registration District: Crediton
Philip Martin 27 farmer
Agness Martin 26
Richard Martin 6
William Martin 5
Mary Martin 2

all in all the 1842 marriage certificate seems the only way to find info about Benjamin

................. or

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JMPK-NTY

Name: Benjamin Strong
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 27 Dec 1811
Christening Place: CREDITON, DEVON, ENGLAND
Father's Name: James Strong
Mother's Name: Mary
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C05074-3

:-)

searching within that batch, James and Mary baptised numerous other children in Crediton 1803-1828 (some a while after birth)

the only other boy (for surname considerations) was James baptised 1827, so Benjamin had father and brother James, may have been named for grandfather himself ?

we don't know when/where your Henry was born so what sort of connection there might be to Benjamin

this seems to be the only female Strong death in Portsea in 1879 and there is no marriage that would make her Henry's wife

Deaths Mar 1879
Strong Winifred 28 Portsea 2b 314

and can't see a Henry Strong born Crediton in censuses to fit someone with wife who died 1879 (all have wives before and after 1881)

I took so long messing about with that post that Maryb got there already

... the baptism record from familysearch fits the info from the family tree

Thanks guys -yes Winifred was the name of Henry's wife - they married in India (He was in the army) - This is why i was fiddling around trying to findl out if there were other family in Portsea at theat time. Can't work out why he would have been there really! He was back in Crediton by 1881 with his new 'wife' (Not married till later that year). His children from the Winifred marriage were back in Crediton too.

Henry was born 1836 Crediton.
Thats another thread though so please don't go there! people will have a go at me for duplicating else :(

You've all given me loads to work on/sort out -thank you very very much
