Hi, I have my great grand aunt Mary Ann Bryant born c1845 in Strood, Kent. Her parents where John Wheeler Bryant and Sarah Bryant nee Fry. I have her in the 1851 Census and then there is a Mary Ann Bryant in the 1861 Census giving as being a servant. I think I have found a marriage for her in 1864 in North Aylesford, Kent to a George Frier Bacon. I can find nothing about her from 1864. I have looked on Free BMD and Ancestry but am still searching. I am trying to find if, indeed, these two did marry and if so did they have any children? I cannot find their deaths either. The problem I have is when you search the marriage it shows other names as well but I can never work out which pair is which.

Could anyone kindly assist please?

Kind regards

Kathryn

Hi, I did find that one. Is there anyway of telling please who Mary Ann Bryant married? Her name is showing that she married but, as before, not sure if it was George, but you have now clarified that one. When I check on Ancestry it shows 4 males and two females, am confused now. When I look on Free BMD it shows 3 males and two females.

Kind regards

Hi Gins, obviously that was my posting before but regarding some of the other Bryants. Sadly it doesn't help me with Mary Ann unless of course I'm missing something. Thanks for your time and help though.

Kind regards

Yes George F Bacon married Mary Ann Bryant ( daughter of John Wheeler Bryant) in 1864.

But you must already know this as the photo of their marriage cert appears on your tree.

So either Mary Ann died or perhaps they divorced.
A copy of the marriage cert to Sarah should tell you if he was a widower

Mike, am so sorry I completely forgot about that and got myself confused with Sarah. Why can't I find them in any of the Censuses after they married?

I think I'm having too many senior moments. Sorry, I really don't mean to waste anyone's time and help.

Kind regards

Doubtful that they would have divorced.
More likely he hopped off and married Sarah in a different town!

I can't see a suitable death for a Mary Ann Bacon before 1870 either.

Thanks Beverley, did they do things like that way back?

You might have to apply for the cert, just quoting Mary Ann's details.

Unless you can find her on the 1871 census as either Blake or Reeve

Mary Redsell married 1/11/1868 Chalk Kent Father John Redsell
Spouse James Hodsoll Blake father James Blake

Going back from the 1871 census you find him there with his mother and father James who has been transcribed as Thomas but someone made a correction

Hi all,

Just an update.

Thank you all so much for your time and help, now have to have a look at this marriage and where the journey takes Mary.

Kind regards

Kent RD now covers all of Kent, except the Medway towns and the London boroughs.
Kent RD now have their local index partly online. It is useful for resolving marrs pre 1912.

http://www.kent.gov.uk/KCC.ROIS.Web.Sites.Public/Pages/MarriageSearch.aspx

So suppose I have a set of 2 couples like:

Marriages Dec 1870 (>99%)
Bacon Mary Ann N Aylesford 2a 611
BLAKE James N. Aylesford 2a 611
FOSTER Sarah N Aylesford 2a 611
Reeve James William N Aylesford 2a 611

and I want to know who wed whom.

Here's the 4 look ups

Name BACON, Mary, A
Year Of Marriage 1870
Entry Number 22
Register C33/4

Name BLAKE, James
Year Of Marriage 1870
Entry Number 22
Register C33/4

Name FOSTER, Sarah
Year Of Marriage 1870
Entry Number 21
Register C33/4

Name REEVE, James, W
Year Of Marriage 1870
Entry Number 21
Register C33/4

The couples who wed must obviously appear on the same entry in the marr rego, so that solves the problem.

A couple of points to note - this index and the GRO index are done by difft transcribers, so the names might vary sometimes.
Secondly, the local ref must enable the locals to find the m.cert, so, like most local refs, there's 3 elements to the ref.
a) there's a church identifier for marrs (C33 here) - it would be a subdistrict for Bs & Ds.
b) there's a register # (4 here) indicating this is the 4th rego for church C33
c) there's an entry or page #

Births are much more incomplete - here's a couple of examples

Births Mar 1840 (>99%)
Pankhurst Mary Jane Romney Marsh 5 385
Births Jun 1840 (>99%)
Baker John Cook Romney Marsh 5 376

ROMNEY MARSH REGISTRATION DISTRICT
Sub-districts : Lydd, New Romsey.

Name PANKHURST, Mary, Jane
Year Of Birth 1840
Entry Number 209
Register NR/1

Name BAKER, John, Cook
Year Of Birth 1840
Entry Number 228
Register L/1

Here we can guess Lydd is L and New Romsey is NR.
