Lovely, thank you, will have a look :-)

JoonieCloonie Report 27 Apr 2014 20:42

no such thing as free Scottish look-ups for that period :-)

(not that I know of!)

scotlandspeople is by buying credits but they are cheap

you can search there yourself, you just have to buy credits to see detailed search results

for instance to see parents' names you have to spend 1 credit to see the detailed search results then you can spend a bit more to see the actual image

I did a quick search

1902-1906 there were 15 John Dixon births

but no John William Dixon

Hi there,

Thank you for all your help, I will have to chew over this information carefully, I'm afraid as to living relatives, no one knows anymore, indeed they didn't know about John William, so thank you all, I will have a great look soon. Thank you :-D

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 20 Apr 2014 20:21

If JWD was indeed 26 when he married on 13 Jan 1930, then the very strong odds are that he was born in 1903 and had not yet had his 27th birthday in 1930, but he could have been born in the first two weeks of January ...

if he was born in late 1903 his birth might have been registered in 1st quarter 1904

so these are the available births

if he was born after census date he would appear as born est. 1904 in 1911
so I have added the 1911 census info for each one

Births Mar 1903
Dixon John William Tynemouth 10b 309
(poss died Sep 1904 Tynemouth aged 0?)

Births Jun 1903
DIXON John William Sunderland 10a 832
- with parents John William and Alice Jane in Southwick Durham

Births Jun 1903
DIXON John William Driffield 9d 371
(died Dec 1905 Driffield aged 2)

Births Sep 1903
Dixon John William Lanchester 10a 368
(died Sep 1903 Lanchester aged 0)

Births Dec 1903
Dixon John William Sculcoates 9d 232
- probably with parents Abraham and Edith in Sculcoates (shown as born Hull)

Births Mar 1904
Dixon John William St. Olave 1d 262
- with parents Frederick and Sarah in Bermondsey (shown as born London)

so anyway it seems that all the John William Dixons born within the time to match the stated age in 1930 are accounted for

another possibility is that he minimized his age in 1930 given that the bride was 17 (and the marriage having apparently been necessary) - her parents being present and witnesses indicates that parental conent was given

there was only one other birth to the Dixon-Drury marriage, approx a year after the first ... this is somewhat unusual and one wonders whether this was the family rift ... early estrangement between the spouses

maybe your friend can offer a little more information, like whether she ever knew either grandparent, or her parent's sibling ... is the sibling possibly still living?

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 20 Apr 2014 19:42

wondering whether we have one of the classic scenarios here

Dixon was JW's mother's name and he was registered in that name
Arthur James was his father or his stepfather but was not a Dixon

or

Dixon was JW's father's surname
but his parents were not married and his birth was registered in his mother's surname
and he later adopted his father's surname

or

JW was registered in his mother's (or father's) surname
but his mother later married or partnered with a Mr Dixon
and he adopted his stepfather's surname

for instance, I considered this possible marriage that could have given JW Dixon a stepfather Arthur J

Marriages Jun 1911
Atkin Susan A Horncastle 7a 1470
Curtis Michael L Horncastle 7a 1470
? Dixon Ada Horncastle 7a 1470
? Marshall Arthur J Horncastle 7a 1470

but for that one, Dixon married Curtis (births afterward in Horncastle)

and there isn't another Dixon + Arthur J marriage in the Lincolnshire vicinity 1900-1920

but then ... John William could have been born anywhere ...

JoonieCloonie Report 20 Apr 2014 19:17

nuttybongo maybe you would post the actual details and maybe links? that is a little vague for anyone to know what it's about ... found births/baptisms, found them in a census, in a family tree ... ?

... okay 1911 census in Chester le Street

James Dixon 41 born Belfast, coal miner, deputy overman below ground
Margaret Jane Dixon 38 born Durham
Jessie Skeen Dixon 17 stepdaughter
John William Dixon 8 son
Hamilton Dixon 7
James Dixon 4
Robert Hall Dixon 3
Thomas E Dixon 10/12
William Flowers 80

Marriages Jun 1898
Dixon James Chester Le Street 10a 834
Skeen Margaret Jane Chester le S. 10a 834

looks a little remote :-)

nuttybongo

nuttybongo Report 20 Apr 2014 18:26

I have found one possibility, that Arthur James could have been born and married in Belfast, I have found one as a James dixon and John William in the family, right age, just a thought :-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 20 Apr 2014 00:07

unfortunately the 1911 shows my guess, John William Bray Dixon as son of John Willam Dixon, a postman

John William Dixon 28
Lily Ann Dixon 31
John William Bray Dixon 5
Ivis Lily Dixon 3
45 Haven Avenue Gt Grimsby Lincs

so Sheila's excellent information rules him out :-)

but I don't see any match for our JWD and his father in 1911 ...

there is no Arthur James Dixon marriage in Lincolnshire ever

and the ones there are in the 1911 don't have a son named John William

there may be things not adding up

If it is that birth that JoonieCloonie posted, then the B is Bray, which could give clues as to his ancestry - but marriage certificate needed.

JoonieCloonie Report 18 Apr 2014 04:19

the only likely looking candidate seems to be this one

Name: John William B Dixon
Birth Date: 1 Jan 1906
Date of Registration: Jun 1983
Age at Death: 77
Registration district: Grimsby
Inferred County: Humberside
Volume: 7
Page: 0537

Births Mar 1906
Dixon John William B Grimsby 7a 610

since that is the only JWD death in Grimsby with about the right age

and that is the birth to match (and the only JWD birth in Grimsby)

that's just a prediction though, unfortunately not worth following back without the marriage certificate!

Thank you for your help everyone, think the cert is maybe the only way to go, seems the female side is a lot easier on this one, and it's usually the hardest due to change of names, but alas no. Oops, thanks :-D
