Still on the trail of the Littlejohns (& thank you, Gritty for the above). I'm trying now to determine whether Matthew (husband of Ellen Jane Brooks) was related to John Littlejohns, the political activist and author. John Littlejohns was born in the same year as Matthew in a different part of Devon (Tavistock). His family moved from Devon to Glamorgan (Aberdare) in 1866. Matthew Littlejohn's family also moved to Glamorgan (Neath) in the 1860's. Did they choose Glamorgan because they had relatives there? John Littlejohns, Matthew's father, worked in the Welsh mines in the 1880's. John Littlejohns from Tavistock took up the cause of Welsh miners. John Littlejohns parents came from farming stock in Tavistock. Their names were James Littlejohns and Elizabeth Burn. Can't pinpoint either of them - and Littlejohns and Burns weren't rare names in the West country. There was a Martha Littlejohns who married a Thomas Burn in Tavistock and they had a son James in 1853. This obviously cannot be the father of the political John Littlejohns but the coincidence of the family names is interesting. Does anyone have any info on the ancestry of the Aberdare branch that might link them to the Neath branch? - or disprove any link?

I thought it would be straight forward, but having a google has confused me re St Clements Road School.

If, St Clements Road School was in St Clements Road, then according to Complete Listing of the Streets of London in 1891 (http://www.census1891.com/streets-s.php) there is only one St Clements Road- in Kensington.

I then rechecked the school record (on Ancestry) and tried to see front cover/ first page of book for an address- none found., although it does state Kensington & Chelsea Borough. This is the listing on Ancestry with notes and reference which may help further searching:
Wm Littlejohn
Age: 7
Birth Date: 20 Sep 1887
School: St Clement's Road School
Borough: Kensington and Chelsea
Admission Date: 26 Aug 1895
Parent: Matthew
Notes: Saint Clement's Road School 1880 - 1904, Sirdar Road School 1904 - 1936. Avondale Park School from 1936
Reference Number: LCC/EO/DIV01/STCL2/AD/002

I too tried a quick search for John Tyler- yes, his parents were terribly inconsiderate; I had no idea there were so many. If the information is essential to the Littlejohn Tree I think you'll need the marriage certificate to progress.

Helen : The old Bailey is wonderful stuff: have read the whole spiel (many thanks for link). I'm glad she could afford a fur and hope she could save up for another one for her wedding! I've looked for John Tyler on war records but there were too many. V inconsiderate of the parents to call him JohnI
Was working on the stuff about Wm's schooling for which also thanks. Pity there's no address for the school. Can't pinpoint it - Kensington & Chelsea & Notting Hill all had / have St Clements sthg schools but the L's were in all boroughs. Demonstrates how peripatetic they were, however.

Oh dear, you may be right- I don't see any children for the marriage.

Thought this might be of interest:

Proceedings of the Central Criminal Court, 3rd March 1908, page 49

SCOTT, Edward (18, labourer) ; robbery with violence upon Nellie May Littlejohn, and stealing from her one fur stole.

Mr. Kershaw prosecuted.

NELLIE MAY LITTLEJOHN .I am a domestic servant, in service at Kensington. On Sunday, January 26 last, I was walking along Bethnal Green Road, between half-past six and a quarter to seven. I was then wearing a fur boa, which was taken from the back of me. Two of the boys ran away, and I turned to the third (the prisoner) and said, "Did you see that boy take my fur?" He immediately gave me a heavy blow at the side of my face with his fist and another blow at the back of my neck and ran away. I felt dazed and after walking on a little way I spoke to a policeman. I have never seen my fur since. I went to Commercial Street Police Station the same evening and picked the prisoner out of about a dozen persons....

Despite their apparent bad start in life, all three of the boys seem to have done well in their Army careers - Cyril becoming a Lieutenant and Leslie's record shows him as Clerk and well thought of.

Cyril's medal card show that he entered the war In France in 1914, in the Royal Flying Corps. There was probably another record from then until he was commissioned.

Just a word of caution, on getting the two families mixed up, my grandfather's children and his brothers' children had the same names, but different DOBs. So need to check birth dates carefully :-)

I'm in a whirl now. If I knew how to do it I could post the Littlejohn tree I've drawn up with all the info so far. Will have a go. The other William, if he is the brother (and the birth dates fi, - and brother William was in the right household in Milton Damerel (the parish that Shebbear is in) when they lived in Devon at Gitcott Mill - and also subsequently in Glamorgan) perhaps took on some of the family of his brother?.

Gritty Report 12 Aug 2014 14:33

OMG, my head is spinning with Lttlejohns!!- I just created a tempory tree to sort out how William and Ann are connected- still don't know yet and reluctant to put anything here yet as I think it might confuse things, BUT at least two of their daughters were nurses in 1911- I'll get back to it in a bit.

The Edith record is definately Mazingarbe

William's attestation was from FMP

I did post about Cyril's details on FMP a couple a pages back (I think?)
details for Cyril as follows:
British Royal Air Force, Officers' Service Records
Cyril Littlejohn dob: 11th March 1890
Next of Kin: Mrs Littlejohn, mother- There is an address in Notting Hill that I can't read- Hea?hesius Road. This is crossed out and replaced with Croydon Road, Beckenham, Kent. The sheet this is on is dated 3rd July 1918. I'll send ce and potty a copy by pm (give me a moment, computer's on go slow mode)

On the following page of his records is-
Occupation in Civil Life: Engineer (1907- 1911) at London Engineering, Richmond Palce, Earl's Court.

There is a tree on Ancestry with Lillie Mabel in it. The owner posted only yesterday so is obviously active. She does have her baptism and marriage details and has added a comment the her father is William on the marriage cert. She hasn't gone further back with Lillie, possibly because of the difference in father's name.

Another tree on there has a photo of Lillie, as well as photo's of Frances Tillot and John Brooks. This tree has her parents and siblings. The owner was last on the site 5 days ago.

Odd that the name William comes up on William's Army Attestation and on his sister's marriage. Does Cyril give a NOK on his Attestation?
