Find Ancestors

I can't seem to find the correct birth index for my husbands grandmother in 1905 - 1908. I have tried soundex searches and variants of both first and surname. I am begining to wonder weather her birth was ever registered as she was illegimate. Is it possible that the later is the case?

Elsie Douthwaite July 1906 or 1907 South Shields. I ordered and recieved birth record for an Elsie Douthwaite born in Gateshead but this was the wrong Elsie Douthwaite.

Was Elsie definitely her first Christian name?
what further information do you have to be certain that the one in Gateshead was the wrong girl?

My mother in law told me that Elsies mother died giving birth to her. Elsie was born out of wedlock.She was brought up by her aunt Jane Harvey. I found them in the 1911 census which state Elsie was born in South Shields. The Elsie Douthwaite born in Gateshead is the wrong family as her parents were married.
I know that Elsies mothwers name was Jessie.

What I like to know is it possible trhat some births were not registered.

A tree on Ancestry has this for her birth but I don't think they have the certificate

It would have been against the law at that time not to register the birth of a child but all things are possible.

Not seeing a death for Jessie? if she died giving birth I thought it would help pinpoint the qtr for birth reg?

Yes. I am beginging to wonder whether her birth was registered under her fathers surname and that the Douthwaites just used their surname thereafter. If so I will not be able to find her birth index as no one knows who Elsies father was.
