Jane Anne Hasbey married 1891 Arthur Hann. I can't find her birth or baptism or entry in 1881 census. She was apparently born Greenwich (in 3 census records) in about 1870.Can anyone help?

my immediate suspicion as she is not to be found on earlier censuses or in www.freebmd.org

is that she has a different surname

two options ..........

she was married before she married Arthur, and Hasbey is her married name

OR

her mother married (or re-married) after her birth, and Jane took on the new surname

both can be extremely diffiuclt to find!

I note that there are 4 public trees on ancestry ............ and NONE of them have anything on her before her marriage.

Have you bought her marriage certificate???

That would tell you whether she was a spinster or widowed at the time, AND it would also have her father's name, if she knew it.

When Arthur died in 1945 at Paddington hospital probate was granted to his widow Jane Anne. Address was 77 Dibden House, Maida Vale.

Jane Ann Hann died in 1961, Poole age given 90. Probate was granted ot Olive Annie Hann (spinster). So 1871/72 birth if the age is correct.

Beginning to wonder if she was a patient somewhere on the 1881 census - that 1891 census where they were both working lists all patients & inmates with just initials, no surnames. Surnames were only used for the staff.

I found what I think is the same institution in 1881 but with far fewer patients and no staff listed (Teddington, enumeration district 11b) - but can't see the rest of the hospital on other Teddington districts. Wonder if it is missing?

Added: No, got it in district 11 - just having a look through now.

No sign of her there, none of the females of the right sort of age have the right initials or birth place. The employment records would be interesting though...

Gosh - what a huge response! But I've got all that..........Thank you.
Jane Anne Hasbey and Arthur Richard Hann were married at Queen's Road Chapel,Wimbledon (a Baptist Chapel), in 1891. She was 'Spinster' aged 20, dau of Thomas Hasbey, deceased Seaman).
Arthur's name was actually Arthur Robert Hann, but he was the right man confirmed by name of his father (no idea why recorded as Arthur Richard Hann).
I am hoping to find Jane Anne's baptism at Greenwich. She gave this as her place of birth in 1891, 1901, 1911 census.

Hi David, who were the witnesses on the marriage, do they give any clues? Also did it give an address for either of them?

Not sure if this is of any relevance, but there appears to be a lot of Haspey's in the Liverpool area - many of them mariners. Wonder if the name was originally Haspey, according to this link it has been mistranscribed on a number of occasions.
