I noticed all those too rootgatherer but wasn't sure as the child in 1891 census is noted as Ethel and not Edith so didn't post?

We really need to know what the marriage cert. says to be sure, but they do all seem to fit, although I couldn't find a suitable marriage for Caroline either?

Just to go back to the missing child:-

You state that Henry and Caroline married in 1889:-
Marriages Sep 1889 (>99%)
Dabbs Henry Cannock 6b 683
WHITEHOUSE Caroline Cannock 6b 683

and

Ethel Ann was born:-
Births Jun 1890 (>99%)
Dabbs Ethel Ann Cannock 6b 486

....................but if you go back and take a look at 1891 census there is another child called Ethel who is 10yrs old so born abt. 1881 before the couple were married, so she is either the illegitimate daughter of Caroline, her daughter from a previous marriage, or she could also be the daughter of Henry.

Can't see a birth for an Ethel Dabbs, but there are two possible births for an Ethel Whitehouse:-

Births Jun 1880 (>99%)
WHITEHOUSE Ethel Mary W.Bromwich 6b 884
Births Jun 1882 (>99%)
Whitehouse Ethel Phoebe E W. Bromwich 6b 836

Do you have the marriage certificate, this should note if Whitehouse was her maiden name or if she had been married before?

Do you have any other info about Caroline before the marriage?

or you can pay the relevant archive office to do some of the initial work for you ; it saves a lot of time + cost if you don't need the original documents each time
. they charge per hour but do the work much quicker than amatuers

but doing it yourself is fun

you may see a family connection on an eadjoining page that a professional researcher could miss .
happy hunting : let us know how you get on

No Argyllgran, I am so sorry I completely missed that post for some reason!!! Thank you!
Caroline on one of the posts it mentioned Caroline on the 1911 census as having 2 children, where did you find this record and do you have the names of both children?

ArgyllGran Report 30 Dec 2014 11:05

Have you discounted the death record I posted earlier?
(See post dated 28 Dec @ 17:12)

If you mean the exact address, you'd have to buy a copy of the death cert from GRO, quoting the Volume and Page numbers given in my post.

Admission dates aren't on line - you'll have to contact the relevant archive for the Asylum/WH records.

Sometimes research had to be done the old fashioned way, by pouring over dusty ledgers! :-D

Hi,

Yes you have the right Caroline Dabbs nee Whitehouse if she married Henry dabs and had a daughter Ethel Ann Dabbs. Although I did notice that one record showed another child? I have no record of another child she may have had and I have never heard the family mention it. Isuppose its not beyond the realms of possibility Does anyone have an admissions date for her? I suppose the only thing I can do is to go and visit the Birmingham Archives myself.

So where do I go from here?

Thank you so much for all your help,

Kind regards

Sarah Adams nee Capewell

This site may be of interest to you

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Aston

At the end of the page it says that the records are held at Birmingham Archives and Heritage Centre
http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/archivesandheritage

Either visit or contact them to search their discharge records. They will make a charge if you can't go in person. They may still hold her file which could make poignant reading.

This link will give you a bit of information on the workhouse:-

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Aston/

On other web sites where people have been trying to find out about admissions to Birmingham Workhouses it has been suggested that they contact Birmingham Library as it would seem that, that is where the archives are kept.

Good luck, hope you find what you are looking for.
