I don't know if I am missing something, but I am trying to find information regarding Alice Rebecca Charlton.

Frank Evelyn Boulton born 1879 Faversham, Kent, married Alice Rebecca Charlton in 1900.

BOULTON Frank Evelyn Southampton 2c 57
Charlton Alice Rebecca Southampton 2c 57

(This marriage also took place but I have found Phillips/Lott on the 1901 and 1911 census.)

Marriages Mar 1900 (>99%)
Lott Amy Maria Southampton 2c 57
Phillips John William F Southampton 2c 57

Frank is with his parents on the 1901 census and with his sister in 1911. On both records he is a "Widower" which would mean that wife Alice died between 1900 and 1901.

The problem is, I can't seem to find an appropriate birth for an Alice Rebecca Charlton or a death for Alice Rebecca Boulton between 1900 and 1901.

I understand that Alice may have been married before, but I can't find a marriage for a Charlton to an Alice Rebecca either!

Here is Frank in 1901

Is it possible that Frank and Alice's marriage just broke up and he described himself as a widower?

There is a marriage in 1918 in Essex of an Alice R. Boulton:-

First name(s) ALICE R
Last name BOULTON

People couldn't always afford to divorce in those days and bigamy was more common than you would expect.

hi
just wanted to say people did not always tell the truth on census my mother in laws mother on 1911 census said she was a widow and she never was married

David

David Report 1 Jan 2015 17:48

That is very interesting Kath.

I will see if I can find an Alice Rebecca on the 1901 and 1911 census that might possibly be her.

Thanks Yvonne.

If the marriage in Southampton in 1900 is the same Alice who married Daniel, perhaps she had left him? The marriage is in the first quarter of the year and Daniel died in the last quarter. She also married in her maiden name.

Just a thought, probably way off the mark. The MC would help.

She's also a lot older than Frank Boulton if this is the same person.

Hi Yvonne. Yes I spotted that marriage.

Hi alviegal and Andy

Sorry I didn't get back to you both last night. I see you have made great progress and it does all seem to fit.

There seems to be some mystery regarding Alice. The best thing for me to do would be to purchase a copy of the Boulton/Charlton marriage cert to see what that reveals. I do wonder though that as she married for the second time using her maiden name, whether she would actually have told the truth.

Odd too that Daniel left his money to the Sister in Law rather than his wife. I wonder what the story behind that is!

Thank you both very much for your time, I will keep digging to see what else I can come up with.

Very much appreciated thankyou. David.

Andrew

Andrew Report 2 Jan 2015 11:46

The name on the probate record(Kates) is the person who dealt with the estate, not who the money was left to. You would need a copy of the will to find where the money went.

A copy of the MC to Frank would at least check we have been chasing the correct Alice
