Don't think the Walsall one is correct- this looks to be her in 1911:

1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
48 Newland St Walsall, Walsall, Staffordshire, England
Harry Platt Head Married Male 45 1866 Staffs Walsall Hard Solder Silver Plater Of Spiers
Mary Ann Platt Wife Married Female 42 1869 Staffs Wolverhampton -
Alice Maud Platt Daughter Single Female 16 1895 Staffs Walsall Tailoress Machnist
Alfred Edward Platt Son - Male 13 1898 Staffs Walsall School And Grocers Errand Boy
Henry Edmund Platt Son - Male 8 1903 Staffs Walsall School
Elizabeth Platt Daughter - Female 4 1907 Staffs Walsall

I'll try and take another look at this tomorrow- I'm curious to know how you linked the death of Alice and the marriage of Alice Maud- is there other information that you know about this family?

Gritty Report 21 Apr 2015 21:20

I'm wondering if the professor of music one is correct- i need to look into this further when I'm not as tired, but I'm putting this up now to refresh my memory in the morning :-)

This is the witness on Alice Maud's marriage- living at 23 DANTE ROAD in 1911:

1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
23 Dante Road S E, St Mary Newington, London, England

Mary Grocock Head Widow Female 71 1840 Peterborough Northamtonshire Private Means
Annie Grocock Daughter Single Female 45 1866 London Lambeth Private Means

Elsie Esther Solomon Boarder - Female 1 1910 London Camberwell -
Harold Bert Connock Boarder Single Male 31 1880 London Hammersmith Music Hall Artist

MargaretM Report 21 Apr 2015 21:25

I don't think the music professor is the right family. I posted that when I was under the assumption that she was born 1886. (Rootgatherer led me astray)

Now that we know she was born 1895 that can't be her.

Gritty Report 21 Apr 2015 21:30

Good point Margee!! I am tired, so am very grateful for the correction :-D

But the witness is a connection of sorts- there are several families at 25 Dante Road, listed as seperate households, but I want to look more at these people in particular, who are also music hall artists (from 1911 census):

1911: 25 Dante Road, Newington Butts SE
Alice Tyler Head 1865 46 Female Married 29 MUSIC HALL ARTIST KENTISH, Kent, England
May Tyler Daughter 1891 20 Female Single MUSIC HALL ARTIST Manchester, Chester, England SE

married 29 years- 2 children- 2 still living (although this is crossed out and then put in again next to daughter, May)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Alice Tyler is on Electoral register here until 1915, but not there after the war in 1921. Seems quite a coincidence that this Alice is a similar age to Alice Platt and that Alice Platt died at this address in 1916!

Gritty

Gritty Report 22 Apr 2015 08:03

Have to go to work in a bit, but will look again later.

Just looked at your original post-
Was it James Platt that registered the death of Alice Platt?

You've said that James was living at 25 Dante Road- was this also where Alice died?

What address did Alice Maud give on her wedding certificate?

Gritty

That 1901 family are on 1911 census in Walthamstow and still shown as house painter

Think some of this family went to America so for the time being ruling this one out

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 22 Apr 2015 13:05

Have been reading this thread with interest.

Just my pennysworth - I wouldn't dismiss a house painter, my husband is a specialist painter and decorator and apart from the usual household stuff has often painted scenery for theatre and television companies. At the time of the Platts in question a scenic artist would paint backdrops in theatres and music hall but may also do house decorating to put food on the table.

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 22 Apr 2015 13:12

He must be skilled then MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 22 Apr 2015 13:17

Yes he is GlitterBaby - that's the point!

He always records his occupation as painter & decorator and so may have James Platt.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 22 Apr 2015 13:40

It's interesting that the occupation of the Alice Platt admitted to the workhouse in Feb 1916 was a Dresser (would that be theatrical, or another sort?). She was admitted by the order of Carlisle.

Gerry Report 22 Apr 2015 15:14

First of all APOLOGIES. I didn't respond later last night because like an idiot I didn't realise the thread had moved onto a second page!!

I would like to thank you all again for your help and interest. Having read the posts from post 9.00 last night and today I am feeling a bit more hopeful.

I will now endeavor to answer the various queries.

Harold Bertie Connock (the witness) was obviously a family friend as I have traced him living with Alice Maud and her husband Arnold Batlett at various times and addresses in London from 1920 to 1956.

Alice was a wardrobe mistress in the theatre and daughter Alice Maud was a music hall artist.

Alice's death cert says she died in the "temporary workhouse infirmary Westmoreland Rd" . It also says she was "of 25 Dante Rd, wife of James Platt a scenic artist". The informant was A M Platt, daughter, 25 Dante Rd"

When Alice Maud married Arnold Bartlett in 1920 she gave her address as 22 Chatters(?) Square, New Kent Rd, the same as Arnold's address.

Just to add a bit of spice, its is believed Arnold had an affair with a music hall chorus girl who went by the name of Olga. There a photo post card of her which says "to Arnold from your sweetheart Olga" She was in a show called Zigzag in 1918. She is another blooming mystery I cannot resolve!!

Gerry :-)

Gritty Report 22 Apr 2015 16:09

I still haven't given up on this.

Just throwing this stuff down so I don't keep going round in circles-

James is not present at his wife's death, nor is he the informant. He is also not a witness to his daughter's wedding and nor is he living at Chatteris Square or Dante Road. So we have no proof of his existence, other than the information provided on the death and marriage certs by Alice Maud.

The other witness:
1922:
22 Chatteris Square, New Kent Road, Southwark.
Florence Annie Harman

In 1920 she's at same address but living with a George Harman.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I keep seeing this family- putting it here just in case:
1911: 16 Berger Road, Homerton N E
Elizabeth Platt Head 1846 65 Female Wid London, 5 children still living.
Alfred Platt Son 1874 37 Male Married MUSIC HALL ARTIST Merton
Fred Platt Son 1880 31 Male Single HOUSE PAINTER Merton

Hi Gritty

Are you getting as frustrated as I have been for months? LOL. Thank you for your persistence.

I have just spoken to my friend whose Tree this is and she thinks May Tyler may be Alice Maude's stage name. She is going to check all her paperwork and let me know. However, I am not getting too excited yet as she has a bad habit of latching onto things only to find out later she was wrong!! Hi Ho.

There are so many little threads that suggest this or that but they remain elusive

Gerry :-(

Gritty

Gritty Report 22 Apr 2015 18:15

I feel the Tyler's are the correct people, but as you say, we have no proof of this- but even with proof, I still can't see them on any other census. SO yes- Very frustating :-D

Arnold was still serving in the army in 1918- so could've seen the Zig Zag cast in quite a few places. Newspaper articles 1918 have it playing in London, Birkenhead and Paris.

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 22 Apr 2015 19:50

Seeing as May TYler is shown as being born in Manchester in 1891, then the marriage Ann posted looks compelling...

Name: James Platt
Spouse's Name: Alice Taylor
Event Date: 02 Aug 1890
Event Place: Saint John The Evangelist, Accrington, Lancashire, England

Alice Taylor - how easy to have a stage name of Tyler?

Total conjecture of course :-)

EDIT no this marriage is on Ancestry - he a widower and she a widow maiden name Hirst and both born in 1830s

Jude

Gerry

Gerry Report 22 Apr 2015 22:35

damn! :-D

Gerry

Gerry Report 23 Apr 2015 13:01

I can now confirm Alice Maud went by the stage name May Tyler and her business card says "Comedienne & Speciality Dancer". The address is given as 36 Chester Mews, Regent Park.

Alice Maud and husband Arnold lived at 36 Chester Mews form 1925 to 1931/33.

All very interesting but doesn't really get me very far!!

Gritty

Gritty Report 23 Apr 2015 14:43

So the Tylers at 25 Dante Road are almost certainly the correct people- so we know that May/ Alice Maud was born somewhere around Manchester and her mother was born Kentish town.

Interestingly I did see quite a few articles listing a May Tyler,Serio & Dancer, and later on Comedienne & Dancer. I'm just going to take a look at the dates- back in a bit.

Gritty

Gritty Report 23 Apr 2015 15:06

I suspect they were a travelling family- these maybe May Tyler although not possible if she was born around 1895!- but I'm wondering if she lied about her age on her marriage to make her age fit with her husbands? If I see anything else I'll let you know.
