Are you certain that Vera didn't leave a will?

As far as I am aware, Vera's estate would be divide equally between any blood Aunts and Uncles assuming she had no surviving siblings or blood related nieces and nephews. If any of those are deceased then their share is passed to their children. If her brother had any children then I think their claim would take precedence over her aunts or her cousins.

Have a look here as this gives quite a good chart explaining relationships with regard to inheriting

Just one point. - It is very doubtful that any aunts could possibly be living as the cousins are now in their 80s. Would that rule still apply?

rootgatherer Report 28 Apr 2015 08:39

If and only if, the 1911 census is correct and is your William Charles Mayo, then he had two sisters. You do know that Vera's cousins would not necessarily get equal shares of her estate? So for example if Vera had 2 aunts on the Tissington side then her estate would be split equally between those 2 and the 2 on the Mayo side. Each would be entitled to 25 % of her estate. The offspring of each of the aunts would be entitled to a share of their mother's 25%.

A lot of info there. As far as I can deduct any living children of Emma Mays would be cousins of the late Vera and would be beneficiaries of any possible assets of Vera's estate.. On Vera's mother's (Tissington) side of the family there are three living cousins.

Ok, following you now Joseph. Your first step is to get a copy of William Charles Mayo's marriage certificate to confirm his age and his father's name and occupation. That way you can be sure we are working forward from the correct grandparents of Vera :-)

P.S. I assume that you know that her brother had no children.

Joseph

Joseph Report 27 Apr 2015 22:58

Yes, rootgatherer, I wished to find any living nieces and nephews of William Charles Mayo as Vera died without making a will.

Oops, apologies Joseph. Senior moment mixing up my Arthurs and Alfreds. Sorry.

Are you looking to work back from you uncle William Charles or find other nieces and nephews of his please?

Joseph

Joseph Report 27 Apr 2015 17:53

Thank you, rootgatherer, Alfred and Vera were my cousins but I don't know Arthur Henry Mayo. Certainly not a son of William Charles Mayo. Your efforts much appreciated.

On his own at the same address as above, so perhaps, like his sister, he didn't marry.

Joseph,
so if you know for definate that he married May Tissington, then the first thing to do is to buy a copy of the marriage certificate, (you can find the details on my earlier post).
This should give you the name of his father and his occupation which should help to confirm if the census info I posted is the correct family.
Always best to back any information found with the correct documents to make sure you don't go off looking into a family that is not correct.
When you have the certificate, you could come back to your post and put the details so we can see if the census records are correct.
After that we can either go on looking into the above family, or take another look to find the correct one.

Thank you , Catherine, Willy, as he was known, married my mother's sister, May Tissington. All the information you have given is very useful to me. Their daughter, Vera, my cousin, died 2013. She never married and left no will.
