Was emigration from Scotland to Northern Ireland common?

I have a GGGF who apparently was from Helens burgh Dunbartonshire

I don't even my Father knew that

I wanted to disbelieve the info I'd been given i.e. fisherman from Dumbarton but

he was married to my Father's GM and he was incorrect then all my Father's side of my family tree was wrong.

I thought in the early 1800's people were emigrating from Ireland
He is listed somewhere as a weaver and his son was a general labourer, and his son was a dock labourer 1874 - 1940 and his son was (is) my Father 1918-1990

To come that far inland. Would he be selling his fish I'm wonder?

". . . that far inland" - how far? Where did he live in NI?

If you've also found him listed as a weaver, perhaps he changed his occupation from fisherman to weaver (or vice versa, depending on the dates of the two bits of information).

Many from that time and later did more than one job so they had something to fall back on when things were bad,,a fisherman could be grounded for days at a time due to bad weather /poor fish catch,, so no work,no pay and mouths to feed.

My Father liked Glasgow and its surrounding. I wonder if he knew?

GGGF's home town is near by.

my GGF Francis Irvine in the 1911 census as being a general

labourer at aged 70. The mind boggles

I've no desire to be a nuisance but on looking for Francis Irvine in the

1901 census I see there are two listed. One is in Bristol, the other Gloustershire.

Neither of which is Dumbarton or Northern Ireland.

Is there any one bored with the time and inclination to explain where I'm going wrong :

Its difficult to know where you have gone wrong (if you have) as only you know what is on your tree ....
It would be an idea to show details of the family and how you are related to Francis Irvine....
Have you searched the Scottish 1901 census as well as the UK..

Exactly where did you locate 70yr old Francis Irvine at 1911?

Is he the general labourer living with wife Rosanna in Duncairn, Antrim ?
The same Francis Irvine lives at the same address in 1901

(This Francis Irvine married Rosanna Galloway in 1864)

Apparently from what I can make out Francis was born Helensburgh....(maybe even got that wrong..!!)

This is my understanding of my paternal lineage
I am David Irvine b1945

I am the son od Samuel Galway Irvine 1918 - 1990

He was the son of Samuel G Irvine 1874 - 1940 and Sarah McClarnon

He was the son of Francis Irvine d abt1919 and Roana Galloway

He was the son of another Francis (from Dunbarton I was informed) (?)

Okay David...That will correspond with the info.posted by GlasgowLass 1911 Census Antrim.....
Francis states he was born Antrim so initially we need to go back to his birth or marriage details to find out if his father was Francis (Helensburgh).....Do you have either..?

I have the marriage of Francis to Rose Anna Galloway from a previous thread.

If my memory is functioning correctly I had a download of the marriage certificate

and his Father was Francis and hers was Samuel.

I will have a look and see where I got that from

David...Everything so far is looking as if you are correct..I have located the Marriage and the children of Francis and Roseanna.

The 1911 Census states they had 10 children and only 3 living at that time...
1901 shows only daughter Roseanna at home with her parents....

His Father was Francis and her Father was Samuel

Unless I'm very much mistaken it is the

senior Francis who allegedly came from Helensburgh
