09 April 1919 - Sheffield Evening Telegraph - Sheffield, South Yorkshire

Fuel Prosecutions.
Three men, Walter Redfern, of 32, Dun Street, Sheffield; Colin Pearce, 66. Green Street, Sheffield, and William Knott, of 27, Roscoo Road, Sheffield; were charged with obtaining a quantity of coal, from a man who was not a registered coal merchant.
All defendants pleaded guilty, and Pearce and Redfern said they had just been demobilised, and were in need of coal. The magistrates fined the defendants 5s each. They understood it was the first it was prosecution of it's kind in Sheffield, and they hoped it would be the last.

re- Ellen Redfern born 1880-
there is a Ellen Redfern in the 1891 census
living with a James & Jane Middleton as adopted daughter
As far as I can see Jane was a Redfern before she married.
Just a thought as there was no father's name on the birth cert

Janette

Janette Report 25 Feb 2016 12:38

HI sorry tobe a pain again,
Ellen Redfern born sheffield 1911
her brother Alfred Redfern born 1909
when he married in 1931 wedding certificate says he was living at 6/10 Hoyle street.

But the family living at this addresswas a family called Gabbitas.
Ada Gabbitas born 1887
married WalterRedfern born 1887 married 1908
Walter Redfern was the uncle to Ellen Redfern and Alfred Redfern.
so do you think the Redfern family moved in with the Gabbitas family as lodgers due to possibility of being poor.

Janette ..............

where did you get your information on the family birth dates and places?

The only marriage I can find for a George Redfern to an Ellen was in 1907, and that was to an Ellen Lunn. They are on the 1911 Census, married 2 years, no children.

Hi Detective thank you for the info of 1939 census
Ellen Redfern did marry George Ruston
but i didnt know there occupations and the address.
Ellens father died 1935 and her mother 1958. its allvery strange

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 24 Feb 2016 17:47

Assuming the 1911 posted by rootgatherer is correct, George couldn't possibly be widowed on 2 Apr 1911 (census date) if Ellen was born on 24 Sep 1911.

Perhaps her mother/his wife was living with someone else and had taken their name?

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 24 Feb 2016 17:32

Although it doesn't help with the people missing from the 1911 census - do you have this from the 1939 register?

60 Galsworthy Road , Sheffield C.B., Yorkshire (West Riding), England

Ellen Ruston 24 Sep 1911 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married

I don't see his parents or siblings in 1911 either. Perhaps as Jansmith has suggested some parts of the 1911 Sheffield census are missing.

If hoyle street (from info on other thread) is where they might be in 1911 it seems to be missing page on census. Perhaps someone knows how to find if pages were missing from Sheffield.
