Thanks rootgatherer :-)

I'm back on track

Ruth Report 22 Mar 2016 19:39

hi I'm back.

I don't think there can be that many rosemary Frances smiths ?? can there ??

But I googled abbots road York, it was in Knaresborough - which isn't too far away, but not an area that dad has ever known her live, not saying she didn't.

When dad was born (end of 1950), his dad has recorded on the birth certificate that they were living at my great grants address (anthea drive, York).

Gonna try and make some sense of all this information now - you've all come up with so much, keep it coming :)

Just in case it's relevant there's also a Margaret Hudson at 199 Abbots Road in 1949

Ruth Report 23 Mar 2016 07:13

Another mistress !??!

This family is so confusing

AustinQ Report 23 Mar 2016 09:14

Margaret Hudson may have just been the homeowner and they rented rooms from her, but I mentioned it just in case she was a relative.

Ruth Report 23 Mar 2016 10:11

Thanks. I'll make note of the name too x

Hi. Can anyone see any possible siblings for dad ??

I think I can see a couple of possibilities.
? Marriages to Matilda Burke and Nancy shepherd ?

Any advise gratefully received x

One Smith / Sheperd birth in 1959 in Barkston Ash which looks probable. I found it on Ancestry, if you can't find it on Freebmd I can send it to you by PM

EDIT

Sent by PM

I've found the one you PMd, got the birth certificate. But can't find any other details - marriage, census etc.
Am I looking in the wrong places?

Ruth

Ruth Report 23 Mar 2016 22:13

Any advise on how I can find if there are living relatives (siblings), and suggestions on how to make contact ??

Thank you all xx

Too late for census and I don't see a marriage for him. Without the birth certificate there is no certainty that he has the correct parents. Can't see a death for Nancy J but she could either have remarried or have died recently. Haven't looked for possible siblings for her and can't see her on the ERs.

Morning.

Thank u for your help rootgatherer, and everyone else.

I certainly set myself a challenge when I agreed to do this search for dad.
Without all the help you've given, I think I would've quit it very early.

This is my first time for doing family searches, and typically it wasn't going to be easy.
There's just so many smiths !! ??
I do very much appreciate all the help given, and hope we can give dad the outcome he wants. :-D

Nancy J Shepherd appears to have had a brother and a sister. Not seeing them on the 1939 register and not seeing a certain marriage for her parents. Wondering if her Mum was a WW1 widow so married using a different surname.

It might be worth buying the Smith / Shepherd marriage certificate to be sure these are the correct people. If it is the correct marriage, it may help to know if Alfred Derek describes himself as single or divorced?

Where would I purchase these. Thanks x

rootgatherer Report 24 Mar 2016 18:44

You can't order the certificates from the GRO online using the reference numbers (I.e, volume and pages numbers.

Nancy J Shepherd
Spouse Surname: Smith, Alfred D
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1955
Registration district: York
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume Number: 2d
Page Number: 1851

I think the current price is £9.25 but more expensive if you order anywhere but the GRO.

Ruth Report 24 Mar 2016 20:08

Thank you.

I've done it, ordered a copy. But prob won't get it till the end of next week.

On a previous search I did. I found a marriage of Alfred 1948 (I think) to Matilda Burke. Do u think that's a possibility too ??

Thanks x

rootgatherer Report 25 Mar 2016 08:10

Ruth, I tried to follow up that marriage too but births Smith mmn Burke is quite a common combination. Couldn't find a remarriage for Matilda. If it was me, I'd wait to see what the Smith / Shepherd marriage reveals. Should it turnout to be your Alfred, I would then order the son's birth certificate to find out his middle name.

Nancy had siblings so perhaps we can work forward to trace them. I'm not seeing a death or remarriage for Nancy nor finding her on ERs.

If you don't mind, can you let us know when the certificate arrives please?
