That is a good possibility especially with both spellings i didnt see
That one

The other nearest one i found was death 1980 aged 89 Glasgow Martha Street

Several of the Elizabeth MacDermid listings have mother s name not permissable what does that mean ? If I order document will mothers name not be on it ?

brigid

brigid Report 16 May 2016 21:21

That was one of the ones with no image available .I have to decide if I can afford 12£ to order it .

ArgyllGran Report 16 May 2016 22:18

"Mother's name not permissible" is explained here:

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/faqs/questions/index.aspx?64

The mother's name will be on the certificate, if it was known by the informant.

Thanks argylgran

Looked at Archibald's death 1970

It gives usual address as 8 mill road and the informant is his nephew j.McDiarmid of 65 Borgie crescent .

His father was called George like his 1st son and mother Mary Stewart like Archie's second daughter

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 May 2016 12:24

Looks like Archibald in 1871, even though the spelling's different:

Archibald Mcdermid
in the 1871 Scotland Census
Name: Archibald Mcdermid
Age: 1
Estimated birth year: abt 1870
Relationship: Son
Father's name: George Mcdermid
Mother's name: Mary Mcdermid
Gender: Male
Where born: Dalry, Ayrshire
Registration Number: 622/3
Registration district: Shettleston
Civil Parish: Shettleston
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Garthamlock Farm House

Household schedule number: 38
LINE: 19
Roll: CSSCT1871_117
Household Members:

George Mcdermid 25

Archibald Mcdermid 1

And in 1881, with various siblings:

Arch D McDearmid
in the 1881 Scotland Census
Name: Arch D McDearmid
Age: 11
Estimated birth year: abt 1870
Relationship: Son
Father's name: George McDearmid
Mother's name: Mary McDearmid
Gender: Male
Where born: Dalry, Ayr
Registration Number: 627
Registration district: Cambuslang
Civil Parish: Cambuslang
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Scotston Place
Occupation: Scholar
ED: 1
Household schedule number: 24
LINE: 3
Roll: cssct1881_206
Household Members:

George McDearmid 38
Mary McDearmid 36
Arch D McDearmid 11
Catherine McDearmid 7
Margaret McDearmid 5
James McDearmid 3
George McDearmid 1 - J McDiarmid's father???

EDIT:

Oh, no, I see what you mean!
Archibald's parents were George and Mary Stewart.
I thought you meant J McDiarmid's parents - silly me.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 May 2016 12:54

John McDiarmid of Borgie Cres, who is on the 1930 valuation roll, must have been born 1909 or earlier.

And he must be either the same person as J McDiarmid, Archie's nephew in 1970, and Andrew McDermid's intimate friend in 1964 - or else J's father.

(Just thinking aloud - I know it doesn't advance the search in any way.)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 May 2016 13:12

Continuing with the family, to see if a son John was born before 1909 (who might have been J's father):

George McDiarmid
in the 1891 Scotland Census
Name: George McDiarmid
Age: 45
Estimated birth year: abt 1846
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Mary McDiarmid
Gender: Male
Where born: Killchoman, Argyleshire
Registration Number: 644/3
Registration district: Dennistoun
Civil Parish: Glasgow Inner High
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 97 Alexandra Parade
Occupation: Steel Smelter
ED: 46
Household schedule number: 107
LINE: 9
Roll: CSSCT1891_250
Household Members:
Name Age
George McDiarmid 45
Mary McDiarmid 45
Catharine McDiarmid 17
Maggie McDiarmid 15
James McDiarmid 13
George McDiarmid 11
Donald McDiarmid 8
Mary McDiarmid 4
Archd McDiarmid 47 - visitor

No, it looks as if the father, George, had died between 1891 and 1901

Mary Macdiarmid
in the 1901 Scotland Census
Name: Mary Macdiarmid
Age: 55
Estimated birth year: abt 1846
Relationship: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Kirkinnan, Wigtonshire
Registration Number: 627
Registration district: Cambuslang
Civil Parish: Cambuslang
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Commercial Bldgs Main St
ED: 15
Household schedule number: 6
LINE: 18
Roll: CSSCT1901_253
Household Members:
Name Age
Mary Macdiarmid 55
James Macdiarmid 23
George Macdiarmid 21
Donald Macdiarmid 18
Mary Macdiarmid 14

So Archie didn't have a brother John.

So, John and J McDiarmid should be the same person, and must be the son of either George, James, or Donald - Archie's brothers .

Does that sound logical??

brigid

brigid Report 17 May 2016 13:19

So, assuming John was born in Lanarkshire, and assuming the surname spelling's correct in the birth record, he should be one of these:

1904 MACDIARMID JOHN O'ROURKE M PARTICK GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 646/03 1779

1904 MCDIARMID JOHN M DENNISTOUN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/03 0271

1905 MCDIARMID JOHN M KELVIN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/09 0384

1907 MCDIARMID JOHN HAMILTON M PLANTATION GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 646/01 0617

1903 MCDIARMID JOHN JAMES WALL M GORBALS GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/12 1288

1902 MCDIARMID JOHN MCAULAY M TRADESTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/13 0693

1907 MCDIARMID JOHN MCINTYRE M ST ROLLOX GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/08 0997

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 May 2016 13:26

If one of those births is John of Borgie Cres, this MIGHT be his parents' marriage - the only McDiarmid marriage in Cambuslang between 1901 and 1908:

1905 MCDIARMID JAMES
ANDREW ELIZABETH LAWSON
CAMBUSLANG GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 627/00 0113

You might want to check the 1911 census on SP to see if this couple had a son John by then.

brigid

brigid Report 17 May 2016 13:33

just checked on valuation rolls in 1925 it was james mcdiarmid at 65 borgie crescent

in 1930 its JOHN Mc Diarmed

Theres also a john Macdermid at 18 Borgie crescent but the death informants were definitely from No .65

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 May 2016 13:35

Good!

So John was James's son, and Archie's nephew.

Thank goodness we've cleared that up!

brigid

brigid Report 17 May 2016 13:58

George was not necessarily dead by 1901

In Cambuslang

there's a george macdiarmid 1905 as teneant of kirkhill cottage

1911 census there's a George Mcdiarmid living alone age 64
but married
sheetworker
on 1911 census at 8 clydeford road

also on 1915 valuation rolls at same adress spelt MacDermid

AustinQ Report 17 May 2016 14:38

The Scotsman - Tuesday 07 January 1947

SIX MONTHS SENTENCE FOR PETROL FRAUDS
Sentence of six months imprisonment was passed in Hamilton Sherriff Court yesterday on a 30 year old Cambuslang hirer and contractor, Harold Kennedy, when he pleaded guilty on indictment to (1) misuse of petrol between may 6 and September 30 last and (2) on July 19 uttered as genuine application for form for petrol bearing the signature of James M'Diarmid, 65 Borgie Crescent, Cambuslang, the part-time secretary of Cambuslang St. Andrew's Ambulance Association, for 100 gallons of petrol, the truth being that the signature was a forgery.

Addresses do reveal all sorts of things

In valuation rolls of 1905 in Cumbuslang there are only 6 macd**RM**

Mcdiarmid George is at kirkill cottage

Macdermott Archibald is at kirkill house. I feel sure he is our Archibald

Mcdiarmid John is at Oakley Whitefield av

Macdermid John 9 Oakfield place main St

Mrs Margaret MacDermid at 5 clydeford road she is the wife of Andrew Macdermid ,s uncle Walter

Which only leaves Edward McDermott of 2 Dalhousie terrace church St. ; no relation as far as I know

In 1895 Archibald mcdiarmid was at 31 Clifton terrace with his correctly spelt surname

Geography question Chris.
Cambuslang and Blantyre are neighbouring Parishes and merge at the south eastern edge of C'Lang.
It's actually a 3 way boundary
Cambuslang, Blantyre and East Kilbride boundaries all meet at the same point
