re different spellings .............

remember that the majority of our ancestors were illiterate, and would not know how to spell any of their names.

Nor were record takers often much more literate!

If they knew a "Joanna" that was spelled that way, then they would spell that name that way every time they heard it, whether correct or not! That applies to Vicars, record takers, anyone who might have to take down someone's name.

And, an illiterate person would not know any difference.

You are quite likely to see Joanna, Johanna, Joanne, Johanne, or even Jone as I found for one of mine back in about 1725!

You have to become very flexible with spellings of names of people and of places when doing family research ............. and be flexible when searching for information on them.

Believe me ............. doing the research is NOT hard, you just have to .......

concentrate on what you are doing

ask for less rather than more

be flexible in spellings

be aware that family trees on here or any other site may have information entered in a way that is different from the way you are looking

remember that county names in England and Wales have changed over the centuries.



and NEVER EVER think you are too old to learn!!

Many of us on here, including some of the ones helping you, are over 70.

One thing that may help you Keith.

I notice there are a lot of Trotman families in that area ( including one mistranscribed as Scottman on one of the census). When there are seperate families of the same surname in close proximity it can be useful to make a tree for each one as you find them on the census' , just a basic plan on a piece of paper noting the family and dates of birth.

That way if you do see a link between cousins for instance you can look at your individual trees, rather than have to wade through the census images again. I found this particularly useful when the same first names are used repeatedly, in my case 'William', which went through 4 generations and sideways to cousins etc.

For the info of helpers, Keith has quite a number of threads at this site about Trotmans - under a total of four different accounts that I see, unless there are really 4 Keith Trotmans researching this family.

Thanks Joonie, always helps to know what has been searched for previously. It does seem from some of his replies on earlier threads, that Keith is doing a more or less one-name study of the Trotmans of Gloucestershire?

In this case ( this particular family of Trotman), on the grounds that there are so many families with the same surname in a smallish area I'd rather pick them apart myself, as I know from experience that having the same name as the family a few miles away is no guarantee of connection.

As Keith has said on an earlier thread which I quote

" it does not matter how good a genealogist you may think you are there is always someone that will hold a snippet of information that would answer a question that you may have been looking for years. "


However the reverse of that is true also, ie there is always someone who thinks they know all the answers but they don't...even with the best of intentions and exhaustive research :-) .

A one- name study which had taken someone a lifetime, missed my father's family off, because they went with a death for my grandfather, in the right name in the right area, at approximately the right time... hence I am, according to many Ancestry trees copied from that source, not here at all ;-)

After many years of research on the Trotman family I consider my self an advanced researcher after writing three books now on the Trotmans of Hawksbury, Woodford and the surrounding villages. Do I know all the answers, no I do not especially when it comes to navigating around the records. I have worked for years with some of the countries top researchers sometimes even they hit a brick wall. As far as my four accounts go, that was due to the awkwardness of the GR set up. They have now corrected that for me. My recent request for help was answered successfully by the dedicated helpers that were available to me as a member of GR.
By the way Joonie I do appreciate the plug about my book or books now. Every one is welcome to the Trotman chart that I have constructed over the years.

when you descend from the sibling who left home and wandered afield, your ancestor gets left behind in trees as a leafless twig and you are a lost sheep ...

and when you find the trees and your distant cousins who have made them and introduce yourself, and your cousins say hm, no, I don't think so, then you have to scratch at the door and say please, yes, we really really do belong!

The reason I mentioned the four accounts, Keith, is that otherwise, with your 'member since' date being this month, and only 14 posts to your name, you looked like a 'newbie' to this ... it does help the helpers to know that you have been working long and hard on a family for many years, and especially that you have posted about the family at this site, since there may be info in other threads that is relevant to a new one.

That new join date and low number of posts was precisely why I posted as I did last night ............

plus the comment that Keith made about finding it difficult to find information, and the more professional/experienced researchers on here.

The information available on the profile led me to believe that Keith was a new researcher, not a very experienced one.

I've posted before that there was a One Name Study on my father's family, now deleted by the ONS Group as a result of my attempts to contact the owner who refused to respond to me..............

The owner decided to "lose" my father after the birth of my brother, and to marry said brother to my (and his) mother. He thus made me the child of my brother and my mother ........... despite the fact that he had all birth dates correct.

The fact that brother was only 11 years old at the time seemingly made no impression on him.

Unfortunately, he had arranged to hold a conference of people interested in that name (and with the name) in England) around 2004, AND produced a CD of the family tree, with the incorrect information.

None of my family heard about this conference ............... even though the guy was in fact our second cousin. I was given the CD in 2004 by someone who had acquired it in some nefarious way!

I have now lost energy in even looking at the hints on ancestry and trying to correct them.


Fortunately, someone else took over the interest in the family after the ONS study was deleted, and she has made changes to the "master copy" .... and interestingly, she is a "married in", who lives just south of the border about 60 miles from me :-)

Although I must say that I disagree with her on some ancestral details for my father's direct line of ancestors. She doesn't agree with me, even though I have proof ............... I've given up there as well!

Rosie what was your family name and when you say 60 miles south of the border are you talking about Scotland?

That was Sylvia, and the border is the US-Canada one.

We're just trading tales set off by your comments about family history-doing, Keith :-)
