Thought I had found a 1st marriage for William Fitch to a Mary Smith in Great Sampford Essex in 1831 unfortunately William was born 1800 but what caught my eye was a witness named John Butcher, Thought maybe thats why William Henry Fitch ie In 1871 had children William Butcher Fitch and Martha Butcher Fitch in possibly his second marriage
Think it is an impossibility to go back further unless a marriage can be found for William and Elizabeth Row/ Roe. Fitch seems an old English name and I see records go back to the 1400's

Hi Tiggit. Dismissing Emily Ellen Fitch mother Rowe because on her marriage her father was John William Fitch. Looking at census her mother called Louisa.. Regarding Elizabeth and Emily living in West Ham in 1861 ,if it was the Elizabeth living with William Henry Fitch in 1871 Gravesend, there was no Emily unless she had died but unable to find a death. Unable to find a marriage for Elizabeth to a William Henry Fitch ,perhaps they never got married.

Sometimes they say they were both from a certain place as its easier. If they happen to live in Colchester and need parish relief they can only get it if they are from that town. They can be sent back to the town of their birth if they say different so lots of porkies were told.

No problem AustinQ, I am so grateful at the help everyone is giving me with the Fitch family. This GRO connection seems so promising

John

John Report 4 Nov 2016 15:06

Thank you Maureen for the GRO link. So it does look like the mother of William Butcher Fitch was named Roe, spelt Row on his sisters birth cert.. Now to find a marriage for their parents. Will have to register with GRO and see what might crop up, at the moment come to standstill on their marriage. Both originate from Colchester but found no marriage for them there

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 4 Nov 2016 13:04

I don't know, but I am so pleased. I have searched for a certain birth for years and have spent lots of money on dud certificates. I now think using this search that I have found what I was looking for. I have sent for the certificate- so fingers crossed.

Many thanks Maureen

John ..............

we're trying to tell you that William and his sister MIGHT have different mothers named on their birth certificates!

It is entirely possible that whoever gave the information made a mistake OR thta there were 2 different mothers, but you cannot ASSUME that seeing one certificate tells you what will be on the other!

John

John Report 3 Nov 2016 22:22

Hi Chris. No I have not bought the birth cert for William Butcher Fitch because I had bought his sisters who is my cousins Great grandmother Martha Butcher Fitch. As stated in it mother Elizabeth Row. It is the name Butcher that is completely throwing me.
