Hi Kath

I don't know which site, I looked at records held on FMP and they're not on there

Googling the Lancaster Asylum brought up the following posting from a 2010 thread here on GR asking a similar question re the Lancaster Moor Hospital or Asylum

I have recently had cause to try to obtain information about Lancaster Moor Hospital records. They are held at The Lancashire County Records Office at Preston. The hundred year rule applies, so you cannot read what may contain "sensitive material" about inmates recorded in the ledgers. However if you have details of the inmate, they will (for a charge) duplicate the information for you.

Try Googling and see what else you might be able to find ............ there is a lot of information on the hospital, photos, etc etc etc

Could I please ask, where would I find information on the records for Lancaster Asylum??

I've had Premium membership in Ancestry since 2004, and take advantage of their periodic "free world" weekends every now and again. I aslo asked for help with overseas searches on these boards

I've never had more than Standard membership in GR since I first subscribed in 2004.

I subscribed for the first time last fall to FMP World (actually OH bought it for me as birthday present :-) ), and am finding it very useful. It has taken time to learn how to make best use of FMP and get used to their search system.

It really is a matter of preference which site you go to, and which level of subscription you get.

But don't forget, members are always willing to help.

I think that is how Chris Ho found the newspaper report, and she could see the report for free

.................. although FindMyPast subscriptions include access the the British Newspaper Archives.

just one point, most of us who help do not use this site for the records!!

Most of us joined GR well before the site carried records and so we had to find other places, but we also don't find this site as useful as others.

We use the freebmd site for bmds from July1 1837 to ca 1970-ish ..... it's a free site

The Mormon site Family Search has some very good record collections .......... just watch out for the "submitted records" and family trees. It is also free, and you do not have to join it, despite the box saying Register.

This link is useful for the counties shown if registers important to you have been digitised. You have to search page by page through the Registers, so you really need to have a good idea of at least the year something happened.

Chris Ho posted information from lancs bmd ........ there is also lancashire opc (Online Parish Clerks). The OPC site itself is gradually trying to get Parish Registers online for all English counties, but only a few have been really started. Lancashire is excellent!! These are also free

Case of Stabbing
Epworth
Thomas Maw Reed, mechanic, of Epworth, was brought up on remand, charged with cutting and wounding Robert Major Collins, son of Mr. Collins, innkeeper, at Epworth on Friday night the 6th inst. There was some ill lfeeling between the parties resulting in a quarrel. Mr. Newborn appeared on behalf of the prisoner, several witnesses were called, and depositions were taken at great length, after which Reed, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial at Lincoln Sessions on the 20th inst., and bail was accepted for his appearance.

Mr Brogden explained to the Court that the disturbance, during which the wound was inflicted, arose in a public house. The prosecutor being very offensive, was ejected by the landlord, and on the prisoner following a short time afterwards, he was struck by the prosecutor, and then it was during the struggle, that the prisoner used the knife. The Court sentenced the prisoner to four months hard labour.

Hi Kathleen

If John was raised by his grandparents, he probably was led to believe they WERE his parents, so he would naturally put Robert as his father's name.

Alternately, many illegitimate children would put "a" name as their father on their marriage certificate because "it looked better for the in-laws" ............... and that name was often a family member or some local notable, just because the child knew that name.

Thank you DetEcTive and SylvialnCanada, I have found a lot of certs that I have acquired over the years but hers isn't in it just her sons birth cert, I'm going to buy her birth certificate tomorrow, is it still from the GRO? I have checked out the one that Safc posted and will order that death certificate tomorrow too.
I have got back to the late1700s but have struggled for years on May. Can I ask you both something please? If there is no father registered on the sons birth cert, Why on Johns marriage cert has he put Robert Collins Deceased as his dad when this is his granddad?

Mothers had 6 weeks in which to register a birth, so May could have been born any time between between as early as 26 Feb or as late as 30 Ju, as DET said.

The certificate will cost you £9.25, including post and packing (no matter where you live in the world). Use only the GRO (General Register Office) site, other sites will order from GRO, and charge you much more

You have to register on the site, but it is free.

The form will ask if you have the GRO Refernce Number ............ that is the set of 2 numbers at the end of the entry above (ie, 8c 730). Answer Yes, no need to enter them.

May probably went into the workhouse hospital to have her baby ......

........ workhouse hospitals were the only place where people could get free medical care back then

Other information on the record of the Workhouse posted by Shirley were that May was CofE, was admitted from Ardwick, and that she had given the information herself. Her birth year is shown as 1882 .......... presumably given by her

It sounds as if the June 1883 was refering to the quarter her birth was registered in.

If you only have the birth reg, you'd need to get the certificate to find her full date of birth. As there were 6 weeks to register a birth, It could be as early as 26 Feb or as late as 30 Jun!

The exact date of birth - as known by the informant - was included on DC from the June quarter 1969 (deaths reg from April 1969)
Even if she died before then, its often possible to work out if the record is a likely one

I have just read some records that I received in 2005 and the person said that may had a little job in the workhouse.
