UPDATE

On his second marriage in 1903 John states he is a widower - but I sure can't find the death of his first wife Sarah. Can anyone else?

She was on the 1891 census but John is boarding in the 1901.

I am beginning to wonder about bigamy?

(oh dear!, below article relates to Sarah, wife of John William Spink, who 'ran away' and left children, seems she went with Arthur Humpage, (he's on 1891) children 'left in a filthy state'. states 6 children, 14 12 8 7 5 and 18mths. The father had gone away in July, and did not return until he was arrested on warrant and convicted, he had previously gone away on 15th July, and from that time the children had had no one to take care of them. Thomas Henry Profitt, School Board officer, New Street, said between 1st February to June, the children were always dirty, and were running about the streets late at night uncared for...)

(from above link ...In 1901 William Spink, still a leather currier, was boarding with the Walden family in 35 Northampton Road, Walgrave, Northants.

By 1903, John William Spink, journeyman currier, had moved to 4 Windsor Place, Bridge of Weir. On 21st July he married Sarah McDade (43), a millworker from Bridgelinn, Bridge of Weir. John William is recorded as a widower and Thomas Spink was one of the witnesses.)
